EXTREME Analog Transfer!
we were doing a transfer project yesterday at "Welcome To 1979" & many of the tapes were from the late '60s. some of the tapes had gotten glazed over the years and had become pretty slick, so the deck that had the right headstack couldn't pull the tape- the capstan kept slipping.....SO, we ended up using TWO decks for those tapes.
i thought you'd get a kick out of the video:

the playback machine is a sony 200, 1/4" 1/4 track (two tracks, two direction) 7.5ips machine. the MCI's are all 1/2 track machines (two tracks, one direction) the small sony works great- but it couldn't pull that one particular two-sided tape, it had no backing and therefore not a lot of "traction" on the pinchroller/capstan. i was basically using the small sony's headstack and playback electronics and the MCI's capstan/pinchroller and take up reel.drumsound wrote:What's the playback machine? Why couldn't the tape play on the MC (an MCI-you've got a few of them)I?
oh yeah- there was wow & flutter on that one song. it was from the deck that recorded it....typically the 1/4 track machines were consumer decks and had some issues.@?,*???&? wrote:Anybody else hear the wow and flutter here?
Those tapes should have been baked...
regarding the tape: not all tapes need to be baked. i do extensive testing on any tape before determining if it needs to be baked or not. most tape does not need to be baked, and in fact, some tapes you can not bake. (well, you can, but it'll turn into a brick).
