Australian gear manufacturers?

Post by niccolo gallio » Thu Sep 02, 2010 12:43 am

Hey there,
from the 25 sept to the end of october I'll be in the Sydney area performing with my theater company. I do tour quite a lot with them but this is the first time in Aussie for me. I've spent quite some time in the US touring and scored some good deals buying stuff there and taking it home.
I'm pretty sure there are a TON of great gear manufacturers in Oz but I'd like to be pointed out to the less known, the ones that don't necessarily have an official international distributor. And yes, I know R?de is Australian :) .
I'm interested in mics, pres and outboard gear, also in DIY form, stuff that you can stash into your luggage.

thanks

R0DE microphones...

The real holy grail from australia: The AWA stuff. the "GZ" series of limiters are euphemistically known as the "australian fairchild" compressors.
They are huge though... 5 rack spaces of compressor, 3 just for the tube power supply...

BUT: they are incredible.

Side note:
I love Firenze!!! I have ridden a motorcycle all over italy, and Firenze is pretty fun.
Sydney is great. The beaches just north, towards avalon beach and beyond, are beautiful. The Royal Forest is really amazing if you ride motorcycles.... headed towards wollongong, to the sea cliff bridge, and beyond.. south towards Canberra.

Event is now owned by Rode, so I guess that counts.

I do love my Event Opals!!!

AWA was located in Sydney, so it looks like your odds of finding something could be decent. They made small mixers, mics and solid state modules too. A luggage sized treasure may be waiting for you.

Here are a few links with gear from Amalgamated Wireless Australasia (AWA):

Of course, being part of the old British Empire, there should be some Australian made STC gear around as well.

Good luck and have fun!
