Underwater room mic, light grid room mic, epic drum set up.

Post by brownshoes77 » Fri Sep 02, 2011 5:22 pm

Here's a few shots from a drum session i did last weekend. The drummer brought in a rare 3 ply mahogany pearl masters kit and a perfect condition slingerland radio king snare, as well as a full set of zildjian A's, so i figured i'd have some fun.

There's 16 mics on the kit, most of them are pretty standard, U47 and d112 on kick, 57 and RE20 on snare, re15 on rack 1, rack 2 and floor have 421's, Telefunken AK47 on ride, a cascade fathead behind the drummer, and 414's on overheads.

The unusual mics were a beta 58 inside of a condom set up in a fish tank about 7 feet infront of the kit, a shure sm7 with a cardboard tube taped to the front of it facing at the snare, and a 57 stuffed into a metal tube on the ceiling (part of the studios light grid)

I will definitely post audio samples of these with samples of each mic.

Hey, from another Tape Opper in PA! (there are two Morrisvilles in PA, one as far away from here as possibly and the other very close!). Just wanted to say great pictures, nice gear porn, interesting ideas, and I cannot wait to hear audio from these, very excited! Thanks for sharing!

Is that a D112 20 feet above the kit??

Agreed, great pics, can't wait to hear them!

My goodness. That really is a beautiful kit. I'd be interested in how it sounded. Looks like a great room.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I will definitely post audio later today.

It is a pretty sweet room. It's different, coming from my last room, which was built in the 1930's for the Trenton Symphony Orchestra and was 1600 square feet entirely floating on industrial springs with a ceiling that went from 18-22 feet and some weird old mineral fiber walls. Surprisingly - the new room - an old furniture factory @ 1200 square feet with some brick walls/some stucco, and 24 ft ceilings, i actually like better.

This is the old room -

vs the new -

I also just built a new control room 3 months back when i moved to the new place, and i've been meaning to post a construction thread. One of these days when i put all the images together. For now, i'll just say that it went from being an awful sounding completely empty loft in the old factory, to this -

Jesse - thanks man. It's the morrisville close to Philly, if that's where you're at, although now i'm located in NJ across the river, but not far. I checked out your record - sounds great. If you're ever looking for a studio to rent for tracking i rent to other engineers for cheap with an assistant included.

It IS a d112 over the kit - i picked that idea up from my friend Keith Goodwin who's in a band called "Good Old War", he claimed Jason Cupp used a beta52 as a mono overhead on one of their records, and i tried it out with the d112. it makes a pretty badass mono room, adds a lot of body, and sometimes you can get a nice meaty cymbal sound that is pretty impossible to capture with condensers.

Here are some clips of the drum set up. I was going for a sort of more rock sounding RHCP Blood sugar sex magik sound. A little beefier snare and kick and thuddier toms, but the same roomy cool vibe. Please keep in mind these are dry and unmixed, besides compression on the snare and an overall drum buss with light compression. No eq, samples, or EFX whatsoever. They were tracked into my SoundWorkshop Series 20 console then into my BLA MOD 002 and into PT8.4

Very cool! Thanks for sharing.

Each of the "strange technique" mics sounded exactly how I expected it to!

Beautiful studio! (both of them).
Nice recording, great documentation, thanks for sharing!

I love the interesting techniques. The special effects mikes were cool, but the SM7 w/carboard tube sounded like a very useable room sound. Neat-o.

I was hoping to hear more/some toms in the "All Drums" mix-- more examples coming?

Thanks Chris - yeah it's funny, when people ask me what the "fish" mic sounds like i always just have to say "well, it sounds like it's underwater."

Thanks Gregg - sure, i'll post some samples of a tom beat on here too. The toms sound particularly good through the underwater mic. In the mix, that sound is actually priceless. You're right about the sm7 in the cardboard tube - it's very useful. seriously, you should try it! you can get a great snare sound especially if you bump up 200-400 hz

Also i should point out to anyone listening to the samples - i noticed that on my macbook the fishtank and metal pipe mics actually sound really awful, they vibrate the computers shell and it really sounds bad. if you listen to these ones in particular through monitors they sound completely different. the others translate fairly well.

Just realized i haven't yet posted any good tom samples. I'm gonna try and do that today!

The record we tracked these drums for is progressing really well. I'm going to throw up some more pictures of us tracking piano on my 1896 Steinway B 7 ft grand, hopefully also some video. And coming soon will be some of us tracking Fender Rhodes - which i'm definitely going to get crazy with as far as amping/micing!

Thanks for all the kind words fellas.
