Otari mx5050 MKIII seized capstan motor

Post by hans » Sun Nov 06, 2011 10:36 am

Hi gang was doing some work with my MKIII 8 track last night and playback started to pitch shift down and now the capstan won't turn freely by hand or otherwise. It wasn't too long ago that it was lubricated but who knows how well it was maintained over it's lifetime (only owned it for about 2 years). Anyway, anyone ever swapped one out? There are a few on ebay from 65-200+, and a full rebuild from Athan is 350. Any insight/tips in removal are greatly appreciated.

Do you have a copy of the manual?

I think there are a few folks around here that have digital copies, maybe.

It gives diagrams, detailing how to take apart every inch of the machine. That is your best bet.

Hey thanks for the reply.

Got it swapped out last night with a parted out motor from ebay. A buddy came by and we kept it cool and now we're back in business. No where near as scary/intimidating a job as I thought it would be.
