I think the Tascam units are generally very reliable. I like the Tascam 424mkII I have. EQ on the 424mkIII is better but it has no pause button (like the 424mkII has). 414mkII sounds good, very compact, but no individual outs and you can record at high speed (3-3/4) only.

I have a 644 midistudio, it has line ins that can be routed to any track via a built in patch bay, auto punch, 3 band swept mids eq and is a pretty sweet 4 machine. http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&sour ... group&sa=X

I've made some really good recordings on my Tascam 246. Channels have two sweepable EQs and two FX busses and the routing is pretty flexible. It has a 2x tape speed for better fidelity and the direct tape outputs are handy for using an external board with better processing options. Owned it new since 1990 with zero problems.
