Mic storage & visibility/access

Post by vvv » Sun Apr 01, 2012 10:24 am

Aiight, it's a weird problem to have but I bet some of you can relate:

I'm trying to figure out the best way to store mic's so that they are protected, clean, and yet visible and easily accessed.

I have a couple drawers for 'em, and I suppose I could just buy heavy-duty clear bags (pencil bags, etc.) for 'em,

Or, anyone use something like this?

How about for yer mic's?

I just leave them up on the stands with clear plastic bags over them. I only have 7 or 8 mics total though.

I've a few more, but my space is a bedio and so I have 2 tall stands, a medium stand and a cuppla-3 desk stands. OK, 4 of those, but one has a stereo bar on it so it's in the closet, and one has a MD421n onnit and another a RE320 what have the special mounts so are a PITA to take off. I do have all of those bagged, tho'. (Actually, my tall stands have a condensor, a ribbon and a tube mic, all of which have PITA shock mounts.)

But I have another dozen mic's or so and I hate to just throw 'em inna drawer to be jostled. And if I bag 'em in anything but clear, I won't see 'em to be inspired to use 'em, I think.

Life is tough ...

This is probably going to sound dumb, but i've been thinking about pretty much the same thing. How to store my mics in a relatively compact way and have them visible and protected.
I was thinking of some kind of glass fronted ikea case, mounting tubes (pvc?) of the right diameter on the shelves, so i could just slip the mics on their mounts over the tubes. i dunno, it might work...

For shites and gigglez, I was recording today, and here's my desk. The ADK is under the cover, and some mic bags are piled in the center.

Oh, and that's this thread from a cuppla minutes ago on the screen!

That's a Shure SM63L sticking out by the blue bowl, and a EV634 peeking from behind the the TP (the brass is a slide I was Sandmanning a Epi Firebird bass with until the bridge I just fixed popped again and so I hadda go fretless).

Realised recently that something like this would be perfect. Too bad they're all in america and I'm in oz. I ended up getting some of those Ikea Moppe drawers. They're okay.

Interesting idear, except I think the drawers would only be 6" x6", and of course, no immediate visibility.

Why do they need to be visible if there's a label on each drawer? ;)

Because labels require organization and putting things in their proper place and, ...

... eh, ...

... did you see my desk picture above?

We have old library card catalogs at our place for microphone storage. They work really well. Of course we still catalog with Dewey rather than LOC.

Nice, Mevvv! ;) Looks like quite a few tasty dynamics in there (and a funky ribbon near the bottom???) :P

Might have to cop your idea. Just don't slam that door!

Yeah, I think I like the thing!

These are my left-over mic's, actually.

My drum kit mic's are packed for a jam this weekend, and my good recording mics are on stands.

I have a addiction, y'see ...

I've been searching for a used card catalog for years. They are hard to come by and really expensive...well expensive for something that's not a mic or pre

I hopped on the phone and started calling libraries and schools. It took a few hours, but I found a library happy to give away 4 very nice card catalogs.
