It sucks that bands never have good cymbals. Bane of my existence.

I use a pair of AKG 414b-ULS and I am very happy with them.

I'd also recommend the ribbons for taming the cheap cymbals, but ONLY if you have the right room for it since they are fig-8. but then again cheap cymbals will sound their worst in a bad room (think small square untreated room) no mater what.

Yeah, don't know what your room looks like now, but your money might be better spent on some good rigid fibreglass, fabric, and a bit of lumber to bang up a cloud and some gobos.

That and trying, for what it's worth, to get the drummers to hit the skins harder and the cymbals less harder. (Or just less.)

My controversial golden ladder of elements contributing to a good recording in descending order of importance:

(most important)
Musicians

Music

Space
(not sure about the order of these two)
Instruments

(least important)
Gear

AKG 451's and 460's are good choices. 460's are stupid cheap, just buy them. The Peluso's are ok. I work at a studio that was sent a lot of their product line to try out and they certainly didn't beat out the Gefell, Neumann KM184, or Earthworks they had. But, I liked them better than their SM81's (which are priced comparably)

Even the best cymbals sound better not being absolutely walloped, but try telling that to a drummer.
I should know, I be one.

On the cheap, you can not beat a ribbon mic with nearly any budget sdc's.

A cheap ribbon mic might have a lower output and a cheap transformer but the ribbon makes the mic immune from off axis hash.

Galen is right on the money. Room acoustics are especially important when you are talking about drums... And overheads in particular.

Josephsons are superb, the km184 is also an amazing workhorse sdc.

The player is the key. No mic, preamp, converter or wishfull thinking will fix a drummer that displays poor dynamics.

A great player with less than stellar gear will do just fine. It was that way in 1970 and it still is.

Old heads/cheap cymbals/poor technique/bad room- I've had good... er, decent results with EV635's. Get them real close.

+1...

A step up from 635s--and one of the best OH sounds I've ever gotten--is a pair of Altec cole bottles (thanks, Kearney Barton!), also placed very close to the cymbals...
