electrovoice 635A
Re: electrovoice 635A
I have the PL5 (I think that's the #) as well as a 635a - identical.
I like it on vox, particularly BV's, where the vocal is not the featured sound.
Same, for guitars.
Azza aside, I think any crotch-mic track is like cayenne pepper, jes' a little, unless ya really want a lot.

Re: electrovoice 635A
so recorded some vocals with it yesterday. sounded pretty good. there is some high frequency sizzle to it which is why i didnt dig it on electric guitar, dont know if thats normal. the vocalist was kind of a gravely bruce springsteen'ish styling. i can see how on backups it would give it something to cut through the mix.

Re: electrovoice 635A
interesting.. i've never thought of mine as sounding sizzly but it's pretty relative i guess. certainly a lot darker than any condensers i own but not thick in the low end either....

I wonder if the sizzle is a sign of needing repair.

Re: electrovoice 635A
i was going to say the same. most of these are old and were used like the 664 as a hammer at times. mine has no sizzle, very midrange present and soft top end, i would say yours has an issue.

It makes me wonder about mechanical resonance of some small part.markjazzbassist wrote: ↑Sat Oct 26, 2019 8:05 ammine has no sizzle, very midrange present and soft top end, i would say yours has an issue.

Re: electrovoice 635A
I've had two of them for years. I love the way that they're sort of non-detailed, have no extended top or bottom, can take a good amount of level, and still sound okay. That makes them perfect for stuff where you don't really need "hi fi," but you may not necessarily want "lo fi." I use mine frequently as a room mic on a gritty or heavily-distorted guitar or bass amp and as a mono mic on a Leslie cab. Don Dixon and Mitch Easter love be these things. They were used as close mics on guitar amps on a lot of the early R.E.M. records (Chronic Town, Murmur, Reckoning) and they still use them to this day. I was recently hanging out on a session that Dixon was doing at Mitch's studio and he had them on guitar amps and used one for a cool piano overdub, as well. My pal Mark Williams (Southern Culture On The Skids, Kirk Franklin) uses them all the time as a "butt mic" behind a drumkit. He did a session at my studio once where he did a binaural setup like that with two 635As on either side of a manequin head!

As a far or room mic, they almost seem pre-EQ'd when they are supporting the close mic. They do need a bit of gain, tho', when out there.
