Also, super pricey but that A&F brass snare sounds amazing in every vid I’ve seen. I was talking to a drummer who I sold my old monitors to and he has one. I’ve not heard it in person but he claims it’s that good.

The Mapex stuff should not be slept on, it's affordable and really well made. The owner of the company seems to be a true drum geek.
One of the videos where they compare a bunch of snares had the hammered 14x6.5 brass Mapex and it sounded phenomenal. I went back several times to that vid and others. I have the brass BB thing covered, but if I came across a deal on one of those I’d get it for sure.

That was the first time I ever heard a Mapex that I liked and then shortly after that Jeff Hamilton switched to Mapex which definitely got my attention.
I recorded one of those that a buddy has, and It is a cool sounding drum.

My buddy left a Supraphonic at my place on indefinite loan. I put a new head on it and it just sounds weird. Not sure if there's a warped hoop or something, but it's very underwhelming. Haven't had the time or motivation to investigate further.
it's not often, but you can definitely get a bad drum head that either doesn't seat properly or is just plain defective in some way. Unfortunately about the only thing you can do is to replace it (which ain't cheap these days). I know some drummers that would take the head out of the box at the store and tap it before buying. getting harder to do when all the local stores have closed.

I only have one snare, which I bought for my wife back when she wanted to play drums. I take it to tracking sessions with me just in case. 14" brass Yamaha.

I have several and switch between them on a song by song basis. Supraphonic and COB Slingerland get a lot of love.. and a slingerland wood snare... sometimes a ludwig pioneer wood snare and also a super deep olympic wood snare.

I still haven't had a chance to record it and we've had it for at least 7 years! It sounds amazing! Every drummer is "nah... i'll use mine.." which I guess has been good that I haven't had to deal with any horrible snares, yet!

Main-6 1/2"x14" Slingerland Krupa Chrome over brass. A great workhorse! Nice balanced tone, projection, responsive.
Spare- 60's Japanese Apollo red sparkle/mahogany. Tuned highish/surfy. Nice body,Nice crack.
I'd like a Supraphonic someday. I had a deep brass Tama 25 years ago that ruled.

I had a Yamaha kit with those turning lugs back in the day. Man, those drums sounded great but I HATED changing heads on them. The lugs are supposed to make it easier but I thought they were a PITA.

Carter McCLean did a video with his old Ludwig Pioneer and it sounded amazing.

Newer 6.5x14 Ludwig Black Beauty, 60's 5x14 Ludwig Pioneer that came with my 70's champagne sparkle kit, a cheapo Yamaha steel 6.5x14, and what I believe is a 70's Acrolite. It's painted black, and appears to have been red (?) before that, but it's got a 70's badge. Would love to get it back to the original finish (or even bare aluminum) if I could do so with scratching the shit out of it.

Next the Bison 5x14 mapel 10 lug that was a college graduation present from my folks. That was Number 1 for a lot of years I played blues and rock gigs all over with that one. It even went to CBGB with me in '95 I think.
Been in the room with this one. I’m not a drummer and usually don’t know what I’m hearing materials-wise with drums, but this snare stood out to me as being particularly great sounding.

I played it on a song TODAY. It's still a really great drum.
