I have used the Tel-Ray plug-in on two or three recent projects and I like it quite a bit. No idea if it sounds even remotely like a real one.

Rodgre wrote:I'm sort of a collector of all things Tel-Ray, which is the company which created the oil-can electrostatic delay.
I have a Super Ogan Tone which combines the fluttery lo-fi echo with a beautiful vibrato. All tube as well.
I love the sound of those things.

What is your opinion on fixing these things?
The ones I see seem to need oil. not much point in messing with it if you can't get the oil anymore.
Is there a source for the "deadly oil"
Thanks,
Harry

That's sort of a wive's tale that's been exaggerated. The oil is similar, and about as caustic as brake fluid. You wouldn't want to take a bath in it, but you don't need a hazmat suit to plug in one of these things.Harry wrote: What is your opinion on fixing these things?

You can get replacement oil. It's like $75 a container I think. Check out the Tel-Ray Oilcan Addicts board for info. You'll learn all you need to know from this bunch: http://p200.ezboard.com/btelrayoilcanaddicts

I'm probably encouraging this post to go way off topic again - but check out the last album from Great Lakes Swimmers - they recorded the whole thing in a grain silo. It's pretty neat - there's a subtle reverb on everything and the singer uses the silo as an effect - when he leans back from the mic and sings louder it turns into this crazy delay effect.
Wasn't too into the album on a songwriting level but I admired the production effort.....

I have an Ernest Deffner "Canyon Reverb n Echo" oilcan tube delay. It sounds great. It only has a volume pot and a 3 selector delay knob. It's not versatile but when it works for a song (tempo-wise) it sounds wonderful.
Regarding fixing or part replacement? I have no clue. Mine was in perfect shape when I got it and I've just made sure to keep in in shape by general cleaning.
