Thank you for that much needed laugh. And, yes, I'm a bass player.
Oh, yea "When the Levee Breaks" drums, well, I think they're just peachy.
I think modern rock drums sound nothing like that (for the most part). I don't like the ridged tempo, papery snares, clicky kicks, etc. Just doesn't do it for me. But that's my TASTE. I'm sure everyone's is different.

I said this before in another thread long ago. "When the levee breaks" is the worlds tiniest drum sound.
For great, huge, sounding rock drums, look to "Dy'er M'ker".
But mostly, yes, I concur.
I'm sick of the generic standard room sound of a drumkit. Anybody want to argue the fact that this is the ONE thing that ALL American records have in common? Ever notice those British discs these days use reverb more than an American record would ever dare?

That seems to be happening intermittently on random threads. I'll see one thread refuse to open, and when I come back later or the next day, it's fine.
Report it to the moderator, I suppose. It looks like a bug in the message board script to me.

most drummers dont hit as hard as Bonzo. i play drums but just to mic them up. i will smash them to set the levels and get the right amount of room and all. Then this Zep head drummer can come in and smoke the meters. The room is louder, it sounds like a different kit altogether. i love the Zep sounds though. there i said it

I used to have this link to Bonham out-takes from somewhere around Physical Graffiti or Presence. If you don't like the sound, too bad, but listen to the way he plays. Sure, it's rock drumming - not jazz or anything - but he's got great control of his dynamics (he's not just loud) and plays some great ghost beats. And the 16 kick triplets in a row in (song?) from the first album isn't very easy to do with no double kick pedal.
So, since Steve Albini's drums tend to sound rather large and room-y, should we lump him into this category? I mean this was supposed to be about modern drum sounds derived from what Bonham was made to sound like on record. <----Playing devil's advocate here.
I personally like a lot of the old R&B drum sounds - I'm no expert on which studios sounded exactly like what (Stax, Chess, Hitsville, Muscle Shoals, etc). Flat, cradboard-sounding, super washy cymbals - even a little bit of distortion coming from the cymbals pleases me. Actually, that early Stones record done at Chess has a great drum sound IMHO.

No, that is SAVING rock and roll. My drummer is also an out of control animal, (short skinny italian kid, who swears he never even touches caffiene).
So I have him go fucking wild (like I have a choice) and then I mix the whole effin' kit BEHIND the acoustic guitar. It's this pulsating chaos, while the most important instrument, the BASS actually drives the song.
My drummer made me a genius!
Yes, I am one of THOSE people, up in the attic, trying to recreate the magical sounds of my youth (cheap trick, boston, pavement) on the family 8 track recorder.
