I have learned one thing in the last three days.
We are not bothered by the hum from the Raytheon. We are not irritated, peturbed, or annoyed with it.
The hum from the Raytheon is bestowed upon us. It is a gift. Use that gift.

If you record on a computer use...

What I do... I usually set up an Aux track for monitoring my input, set the plug-ins on that Aux track in Digital Performer for pre-fader, and turn the fader on the Aux track to zero (So I don't hear latency). I use FreeG and keep the RMS between -12dB and -18dB, and watch my peaks as well. I'll compress if my source material is peaky and needs to be tamed a bit.

I'll be recording into a Korg D3200 DAW as soon as I finish up a project I'm working on in my PC. I haven't actually tried the Korg to see if the level meters give me a numerical reading or not. If not, then what?

I have a m-audio delta 1010 card and i cant get the meters on it down to
-18 dbfs (-6 dbfs is the lowest signal i can get when recording drums). The problem is that the gain volume on my outboard mixer channels is turned all the way down(i`m using the channel inserts i/o as direct out).
The 1010 card comes with input faders for each channel but these only affect the
input to logic(post converting A/D ) . I have no problem recording at -18dbfs in logic but as i see it the signal is already converted too hot.....or...ehhhhh
Help me out guys...
Sorry for my broken English....peace
Have you tried switching between "+4" and "-10" on the back for the inputs?

I have the 1010lt version but i`ll check if the outboard mixer channels are
set to +4, i need -10 for unbalanced inputs...right ?
BTW: i`m sorry for completly hijacking this thread...hmmm
only time `ll help,it`s a pain in the ... right now but, i know i`ll get there soon enough

It's a software setting. According to Midiman...
"...A single unified control panel provides settings for clock and sample rates, buffer sizes, individual signal levels for every input and output, adjustable +4dBu/-10dBV pad conrols..."

And when anyone reads it aloud, they can do so by pretending to be a baritone pinching his nose, and then they'll sound all 400 Hz and 3k just like me.

Well I've certainly learned something about metering now....Can't wait to put this into practice....Other than that I've learned to accept that I'll never really get a handle on all this stuff and I wish I would have started 20 years ago but it doesn't matter. I'm still having a huge amount of fun and I know tons more than I did last year at this time....
Of course I've had it in the ear before.....

Things learned while recording and mixing new project:
1. Electric guitars recorded with stereo SDCs can sound huge when combined with a ribbon and a good room. Oh yeah an AC30 cranked to 7 helps as well.
2. Mixing at low volumes is a good thing.
3.SM57s are not completely useless, but that they actually sound amazing as room mics with an appropriate pre.
4. And lastly, the lessons on this thread about gain digital gain staging. Thank you guys.
"I'd rather her sound artificial [auto tune] than sound completely drunk." As said by the producer during a long pitch shifting session.

update: i've just discovered the possibilities of recording a snare using two mics. (SM57 on top, AT4040 on bottom/side). sweet.

Recently I have learned:
* Cranking the toms and putting an unholy amount of reverb on them is AWESOME.
* You can make a mix retro by simply bandpassing most of the elements.
* The labor involved in making something a ton better is sometimes not worth it.
* Linear is a freeway. Nonlinear is a country-road.

Recent cool things:
Using feedback loop on a delay return is awesome. Puting FX and filters after the delay is even cooler. Dynamic delays!
Drum augmentation is the shit. No matter how good I think my kicks and snares sound, they get a little extra somthing (punch, oomph, etc...) using soundreplacer.
The bassist has another band and the drummer for that band has another band. If they all think you're the shit, one gig becomes 3.
