I played in a band called State of the nation, and we recorded both of our records with Clint in his basement in Tacoma.
Probably around the same time you did (95, 96), we also got the dirt on their Hollywood deal.
The other guys in State of the nation were Mark and Rob Haworth.
Mark played bass for Hardstance, Gorilla Biscuits, Inside out. And now is a tour manager for bands like New found glory, Sunny day real estate, Rancid.
His brother Rob played guitar in Hardstance, No for an answer, Farside.
With these guys, I was able to play drums for an Inside out reunion tour featuring Zack de la Rocha from Rage against the machine.
I recorded the narraration for the Rage against the machine "Live in Mexico" dvd in my bedroom.
I also played drums in Shelter for a japenese tour, and Bluetip for a U.S. tour.
Craig Werden from Shudder to think slept in my bed.
A good friend of mine, and the bass player of the first serious band I was in, plays bass in Institute featuring Gavin Rossdale from Bush.
Alice Cooper sat in my chair at my studio.
The current bass player for Helmet is a good friend of mine he also played bass in Jets to Brazil, and sang for Hansome and is the brainchild of Cub Country.
I spent a drunken night in a squat in Paris with some of the guys from Discharge.
I have a tattoo given to me by Scott McFearson who played drums for Sensefield and Elliot Smith.
I hung out and smoked some sweet shit with Jennifer Lynch (David Lynch's daughter).
I spent alot of evenings learning pro tools with the guy who was engineering the Guns and Roses "Chinese Democracy" debacle.
I think that's it.
Thanks for letting me get that off my chest.
Yeah! That is awesome. I remember State of the Nation. I actually met Mark when Inside Out played a garage in Bellingham way back when. He was super nice and we hung out and chatted with him for awhile after the show.

Which Bluetip tour? I caught them two or three times in Portland. They put on a damn good show. I only wish I could have seen Swiz. Jason Farrell is too damn talented for his own good.

I'm not sure what year maybe 98?
The tour was Bluetip, Sweetbelly Freakdown (which was pretty much Swiz) and Kerosene 454.
I know we played Portland, I accidentally spit an entire mouthfull of beer in a buddy's face at that show.
My friend Jim plays bass in Retisonic with Jason.

I saw Bluetip w/ At The Drive In, Murder City Devils and International Noise Conspiracy. Great show ...I'm really into Swiz and Sweetbelly Freakdown as well, but never got to see either. I remember State Of The Nation as well. I still have the Rev stuff you did.

I got my nickname (farside) from wearing the bands shirts all the time in the early 90's. The name stuck and in the mid 90's I used to even get Popeye's email.

I love seeing this on here! These are the hardcore bands I still love, NFAA, Hardstance ...I even went to CBGB's for the GB reunion last summer.

A few years ago, I ended up in a really weird conference call with a couple members of Great White, Snoop Dog's band and the manager of P-Funk all at the same time. This is when I was back in marketing - before the studio took over my life. Anyway, these guys started some weird label and wanted to send a few members of Ugly Kid Joe up to my place to talk about some new project. Pretty weird. That Great White incident put an end to everything.

The Canadian music scene is small enough that we all pretty much know everyone - so I don't count present day stuff as worthy of mention here.

My business partner's uncle played Emilio Estevez's dad in Repo Man.

I did a zine in the '90s and interviewed TMBG, NoMeansNo, Beautiful South, Jonathan Richman, Billy Bragg and others.

My college band recorded a cassette-only album with Conrad Uno. (This was probably around '91.)

Somewhere, I have Viggo Mortensen's home phone number, from about 8 years ago. (I never got around to calling him.) I think he's probably changed it since then.

More recently, various members of Death Cab for Cutie used to come in to the video store I own, back when they still lived in Bellingham.

Best of all, I went to high school in the same town and era as TOMB's own workshed, although apparently our paths never crossed too much (although maybe he came to the Fugazi show that my friends & I put on...?).

Yes! I totally remember you and saw your old band play at least once. I know we chatted about this once before about a year ago... the band was WeeHuggum, right?

And if you are speaking of that amazing Fugazi show where a very young Seaweed opened up, yes! I had no idea you put that show on. That still ranks, to this day, as one of the best shows I have ever attended. That was the Repeater tour and hot damn, they put on a hell of a show. So thank you, because in a lot of ways that show changed my life.

Are you still running your video store?

Right on all counts -- WeeHuggum was the band and that's the right Fugazi show and the video store is still going. Aces!

I've got plenty of NYC big studio name drop, but that shit just gets old. A funny interaction, in my mind, is when I had to go get LL Cool J Latte or somthin' and when I got back he grabbed it and said real stern like: "You weren't sippin' on this muthafucka was you?"
"Na L, I wouldn't do that to you!"
-big smile-
"aight then!"

I did though...

Just kiddin'...

Oh yeah,
And Yoko Ono gave me an egg salad sandwich.
Then she winked at me.

Last week I took my dad out for father's day, to a place known for it's great ribs in Lincolnwood, Il. After I paid the bill I excused myself to go to the john. I opened the door and saw a guy with his kid in the bathroom, dude had his back to me at the towel dispensor and his son was occupying the other urinal. We were the only ones in there.

So I'm doing my business, and the kid is singing as he's doing his....aka, "Now I'm using the bathroom bathroom bathroom......." Kid flushes, "Now I'm flushing the urinal urinal urinal"

From over by the towel dispensor, Dad says "Nice song, Sam."

So I follow the kid over to the sink to wash the hands, kid starts singing "Now I'm washing my hands, hands, hands".....etc.

I look over at him with that Aw, isn't he cute look and turn to smile at..........Jeff Tweedy, who is standing a foot behind me waiting for his son to finish washing his hands.

The funny part is he was returning my smile when he saw the look of shock and disbelief that suddenly appeared on my face, and his own eyes grew to the size of saucers (magnified by the huge glasses he was wearing) and he looked utterly panicked, like, Oh shit, what did I just do?

Once I said, "Jeff?" He relaxed again as in, oh ok, a fan and laughed. I said something stupid about having a nice fathers day and he thanked me and said the same, and held the door for him on the way out.

Nice guy. I thought it was funny that his first instinct when someones gapes at him isn't that the person is a fan and should know who he is. Very down to earth. Shorter than he looks in IATTBYH, though.

Yep, you guessed it - Elwood's. The ribs there are insane. Definitely a must try.
