A/C Draft too Much for Ribbons?

Post by bamse » Tue Jun 27, 2006 12:19 pm

Should I worry about using ribbon mics when I have the A/C on?

don't worry, ribbon mics sound very warm, and should adequately compensate for the cold air.

I don't think it should be a problem as long as the vent isn't pointing straight at the ribbon. It's funny you asked this because I am doing some experimenting with one of my ribbon mics today and when I was testing it as an overhead on drums, I was wondering if the air was blowing over it too hard.
A few people around here made me feel better about how I used mine. If you put your hand to the source, or area where you will be mic'ing and can feel air moving, then don't put it there. If you don't feel any steady air movement, or gusts, you should be fine.
You can always put a pop filter in front/behind it to be extra safe.

slowly panning across something kind of crappy...

Yeah, unless you can feel the draft where the mic is, don't worry about it.

I have to point out, though, that your mics are gonna pick up the sound of the AC! I always turn off the AC or heat when I'm doing a session.
