minimize bleed in church
minimize bleed in church
I got asked to record a pastor during a really loud musical church service. The problem is they don't want any of the backround music wich plays through the entire service. And the pastor will not hold still. I know there will be some bleed, but what are my options to minimize that bleed? A certain mic? Compression? Please help?
man, that subject line is asking for it...
dynamic lav mic to the rescue!
I wonder if you could put a second one on him, facing outward or something (away from his mouth) and flip the phase on it while mixing to kill some of the background sound?
then again, you might want to explain to the folks at the church that if they dont want any background music in his mic, they shouldn't play any background music - unless they can work something out with god to suspend physics for a couple of hours.

Maybe an ear microphone is worth considering? I've never heard one, so I have no idea how much they sound like the person's voice.
Or you could take a cue from live theater work and get a little countryman mic.

dynamic lav mic, perhaps even a headset - either with as tight a polar pattern as you can find. maybe ask the band to be a little quieter that day. ask the pastor to be aware of the direction of his microphone and to stay away from the amps/monitors/drummer.nystrec wrote:We don't want back round music or noise because we will be recording the music in the studio afterwards and they want the pastor over it. I'm trying to convince them to have the pastor come in and do a voice over session but they think the energy will be gone, and I think they're right.
and/or, record the band live and skip the studio. most studios wish they had church acoustics.
If you were planning on going to a professional studio and paying for the sessions, you could likely pay the same or similar and have some one come and do a remote recording that will capture all of the spirit of the day.

I have a Beta 58. Unless you are eating it, it's useless.bannerj wrote:haha...fun with churches
would a hypercardiod work? A beta something? beta 57...do they make a beta 58?
I would try pinning a dynamic lav to his chest, tell him not to look at the band if possible and wear a thick fur lapel
Is it possible to record the band live and fix stuff in the studio? With some isolation and decent drum performances...
Maybe this can be of assistance, if not it is free anyway...

big church? are all instruments running through the PA?
if you use a directional lav and some filtering (dont record a gate or compression) you should be alright.
