Cool Bass/Kick Miking!

Post by junkyardtodd » Sat Sep 30, 2006 4:17 pm

Had a goofy/stupid idea that actually worked out really well: Started off by placing the bass amp (sixties magnatone M7) next to the kick, lining up the voice coil with the front head, and angling them so they point to a spot a couple feet away, where I stuck my Rode NT1. Adjusted the amp to blend just right with the kick, and surrounded it with a mountain of pillows and blankets. Add seperate tracks of direct bass and a close mic on the beater side.
Best low end recording to come out of my attic so far!
Yes, I am one of THOSE people, up in the attic, trying to recreate the magical sounds of my youth (cheap trick, boston, pavement) on the family 8 track recorder.

Hey... could you clarify what you're doing here for me? Are you tracking drums and bass together? Or are you reamping the bass while the drums are recording?

Sounds like a cool technique (if i can figure it out) - i like tasteful bleed.
