1/4-inch 2-track for mastering

Post by inverseroom » Tue Nov 14, 2006 3:25 pm

I know I've posted about this before, but...I'd like to get some tape into my recording process. I've been considering the 34/3440 route, and tracking some basic tracks to tape before importing to digital and continuing from there...but perhaps what I really want is a mastering deck, to send my mixes to for the final pass.

What are my options here? 32? MX5050? Weren't there other Tascams, 42 and 52? What were these like?

I think really I just like hearing you all geek out about tape machines.

mx5050 is cool. i have one, and used it as my mixdown deck before i got my studer a810... for stupid cheap. be on the lookout for deals... also, mci jh110s can be found pretty cheap if you have the space for a big machine... we just turned our last one into line amps. they are cool machines, though.

:D not a chance!

What's a good price to pay for a 5050? And how hard is it to learn to align/calibrate/etc? Are the online resources for this good?

Revox A77s (those *are* the ones that do 15ips, no?) are pretty nice, and small.
I like my Ampex ATR-800 a lot, but it's not that small.
Had a JH-110B and it was waaaay to much work to keep happily running for me. Way too glitchy (M.aintainace C.ontinues I.nfinitely or M.unchy, C.runchy and I.ntermittent. ha-ha.)
And I like those 5050s a lot too. Spent hours and hours on them from '84 through about '92.

My nickel's worth.

I could swear there is a 15 ips Revox. I rented one when a certain Mr. Albini was in the studio years ago to mix to...

Hmmm... might it have been that sweet looking B77 you're looking at? Heck, I'm tempted.

Loved the vids on your MySpace page, BTW.

I'm skeptical of ebayers who 1) use all caps, and 2) don't use English properly... to wit, aside from random spacing between words, the lack of periods, and the odd use of commas, he describes the Revox as a "REAL TO REAL" machine... He does have a good rating, tho...

revox

I have a revox and it does 15 ips and 7.5. Simple to use machine. more portable than a monster teac. I just use the same reel and dub it into digital after each take.

That's what I would do with one...

Yeah, the seller's presentation is not so hot, but that's not necessarily a warning sign. I'll think it over...

Those heads look weird. It's a good machine though, at a good price.
You might want to pick one of these up yourself though. Scary and expensive to ship.

I love my Otari MTR10-G! Bought 2 years ago for $500.00. Heads are excellent, everything works and sounds GREAT! It's big and heavy, though, more like a small 2" machine!! So, I guess that doesn't help, but I thought I'd mention that model...
Blah!
