How to remove Sharpie marks?

Post by linus » Wed Nov 22, 2006 4:35 pm

What will remove sharpie marks from an aluminum panel?

The tech that racked a pre for me used a sharpie to mark out the faceplate on the parmetal (brushed aluminum) rack faceplate.

I've tried Naptha, Goo Gone, and a Brawny "Eraser" sponge. The Naptha made the marks a bit lighter but that's it.

What will get rid of the marks?!!?

Help!

You need something solvent-based, but that might effect the aluminum finish. You'd probably want to test a little on your buddy's equipment... hee, hee.
I found some stuff called 'Oops' in a little metal can at the hardware store. It is solvent-based, but not too harsh and I use it for stuff like marks on the floor and other woodwork. And yes, I'm pretty sure I've used it on Sharpie before though I can't remember specifically right now. You might give it a try.

I use isoprpyl alcohol to remove sharpie all the time from the faders of the SSL's here. I've never had a problem (and I'm pretty sure that's aluminum), but you should check it in an inconspicous spot first.

I use ispropyl alcohol (aka rubbing alcohol) for removing Sharpie marks - works fine, never had a problem. Try to get the 99% stuff, and it works best if you can spray or drip it directly onto the panel instead of in the paper towel.

Thanks for the responses. I'll give Isopropyl Alcohol a try next and if that doesn't work I'll try 'Oops'.

Naptha is a solvent and the Goo Gone seems solvent based as well but I think it's a matter of getting the right combination.

I'm concerned that because of the brushed aluminum texture of the faceplate that the sharpie won't come off. If the SSL a brushed aluminum or is it polished or painted?

Hey Linus, how've you been... Anytime I need to clean something up like tape glue or sharpie I use lighter fluid. Like the kind you would fill a Zippo with. Hope that helps.

Isopropyl alcohol sure takes Sharpie off of stainless. Although stainless is not the same thing as brushed aluminum.

Orange Fantastic is the stuff. I tried the knock off brand and it didn't work as well. Spring for the good stuff! I use it all the time on all kinds of gear. It takes away marker, sticky goo, grease, etc. It's magic!

Simple Green is a cleaning product - it's a fairly non-toxic green liquid soapy stuff that comes in a spray bottle. Good for general household cleaning, but I've never heard of removing Sharpie marks with it before.

Usually you find it at the hardware store instead of the grocery store.

This may sound crazy...but the way you're supposed to get sharpie marks off an eraseable white board is by tracing over them with eraseable marker, then erasing. And supposedly the sharpie comes off with the erasable ink.

Maybe this would work on aluminum too...

This may sound crazy, but it is FACT!

Buy some OFF mosquito repellent.

I've taken many a marking off of things with it.

Superglue accelerant works amazingly well at this... except I don't know where to buy it (I use it at the day-job).

The solvent inside a Sharpie to make the ink stick is alcohol - so probably any reasonably pure alcohol should work. Insect repellent is usually alcohol-based.
