1/4" jack as power switch

Post by peterpancreas » Sat May 12, 2007 11:14 am

Anyone know how to wire a 1/4" jack as a power switch in a battery powered circuit a la most decent stompboxes?

Thanks

edited switching "plug" with "jack" 'cause I'm dumb...

Typically, It's done with a Tip-Ring-Sleeve jack on the Input jack. The tip and Sleeve are wired as you would expect, and the 9V battery's negative side is wired to the Ring. now when a guitar cable is plugged in, the battery is put into the circuit, and when you unplug the guitar, the battery ground is taken out of the circuit, and thus not drawing power.
