DIY audio you still haven't finished?

Post by percussion boy » Sat Nov 29, 2008 9:46 pm

Just curious who else has slacked on their diy.

I've got a tube Hamptone and a parametric eq half done, back to the time grad school got hairy in 2005. Hoping to get a new Hakko for Christmas and finish 'em up.

What's been gathering dust on your bench?

I have enough on my bench to keep me busy until I'm in my upper 60's, minimum. You don't wanna know.

I have 4 channels of pm1000 that I've recapped and replaced the transistors. Just haven't finished racking or powered on. I also have a Tangent mixer channel and and MCI mixer channel to play with. I also have a preamp based on the TI INA217 opamp I have built up on a proto board. Need to finish and power up. I'm sure there's something else I've started but haven't finished yet.

Unfinished Business:

Need to add +48V and pads to fixed gain RCA BA-72 pres I just racked up (thanks to emrr for help with this)

Need to add channel out to funky old mix mixer I just got

Need to build enclosure for 5E3 clone

Need to get chassis for blonde-Bassman-esque amp build and drill it and wire it all up, then build an enclosure

I have a DC-30 build waiting in the wings that only has stuffed turret boards and needs everything else.

A couple of remo practice pads that are going to have piezo triggers installed

Some more patchbay work to do

A couple transistor amps that need repair

Whoo! I feel like I just went to confession there!

I'm still in the process of putting together my ingenius mbox overdub setup.

It consists of a high quality 5v, 15v, and 48v power supply, for two THAT1512 based mic preamps that have no extra chips or bullshit in them, to a TI eval A/D board.

Amazing mic preamp to amazing converter, to give better analog & digital stages than the best benchmarks and esoteric mic preamps to the mbox user with spdif input for under $500.

I'm still auditioning cases for this.. and professional PCBs to put the THAT shizzle into.

half the shit is lyng in the corner of my house.. since the studio I was working in closed, I've lost a lot of interest in all the modding and putting together shit. at least audio stuff.

I've got all sorts of parts around here for projects I haven't even started yet. Hamptone JFET pre (I even have parts for LED meters), opamp testing mic preamp with a couple different choices of input transformer (yes, I'm sitting on a couple hundred dollars worth of mic input transformers), various microphones that are half-finished. Leftover PM1000 parts (pushbuttons, fader assemblies) and a rack case for an artsy-retro monitor controller.

4 channels of PM1000 to recap/rack
2 Oktava MK-219 mods
Orban 622b recap/mod/align
dbx 165a recap/mod
2 MXL 603 royer tube mod
Allen & Heath SD12-2 mixer recap/mod
Acoustic 160 guitar head recap
Hammond M3 overhaul
Leslie 825 cleaning/overhaul
Rhodes preamp mod/bridle strap replacement
Wurlitzer 200 sustain pedal
a guitar that needs cavity shielding

That's off the top of my head. I'm sure I'm forgetting a few things. That's all in addition to the gear for paying clients and the home studio I'm building in the basement, which should be just about ready for drywall after today.

Finally finished my second MXL royer tube mod. Whew.

I think right now, I'm pretty good, actually! Can't believe it!

MFOS ring mod and sample/hold boards are stuffed and sitting on my bench, awaiting panels. They've been there since August...

I've got a Seventh circle C84 that needs stuffing as well as two GSSL Buss comps with turbo boards that need the works... at some point i need to finish my Ward beck M460D rack-job and the passive summing mixer i started. Oh, and I've got to construct a storage cabinet to hold all my mics and mic stands. And with some of the left over wood i promised to help my girlfriend build a play house for her cat.

I cannot wait for the holiday break. Time to finally get some shit done!

p.s. the metroamp stuff sounds amazing.

Any of y'all not-so-busy types want to take on outside paying work? I've got an OSA pre (simple, API 312 circuit with 2520's) that's screwy, and service from OSA is a nightmare I'd like to avoid. The volume knob on the left channel doesn't do anything, though the channel passes audio, and the output overall seems low.

I just received my Gssl board and am waiting for the Turbo Board to arrive. I hopefully will be finishing that in the next month or so.

I am too impatient. I don' do a lot of DIY but when I do get a pro, I have to knock it out as soon as I can so I can get it plugged in and start using it!!

- Calibrate my Scully 100-16 (fun!)
- Build new PSU for MAP preamps / finish replacing crummy MAP op-amps with 2520 clones
- modify new TNC tube mics
- cable madness (need to make a bunch)
- maybe get around to stuffing the GSSL boards I have
- troubleshoot non-functioning Quad Eight CA-137 card / rack up said card with another card for two more channels of QE goodness
- build an LA2A style compressor around the HA-100x / A24 transformers I have
