the 414 sounds slightly honky and forward or bright
cm64 was bright and tinny
4033 was nice but a little scooped in the mids
md1a had a bit of a honky mid
676 i would only use that for an effect
the sm81 sounded the most balanced to me and i chose it as the winner

For what it's worth...
I have to say that this is one of the most helpful threads I have read? I discovered TOMB just last night. Oh, I have meandered through the other home recording forums regularly for the past year or two, but I feel more at home here. For someone like me who only owns one mic (AKG c1000s), but is looking for that perfect one, this information is invaluable; thank you Ian D for taking the time.
I just wanted to say thanks for this, I really can't offer a professional opinion, sorry. By my untrained ears, it is really a tossup between the 414 and the 4033 for me. It would be nice to be able to hear the .wav file in a well-treated room, but?
