Help with motor spinning wrong way on old 1/4" reel to

Post by sfsonarboy » Mon Apr 06, 2009 1:28 pm

Greetings,

I'm tryinig to nurse a few hours of life out of an old Realistic 909 1/4" 4-track reel to reel. It had been basically running, and then just started going the wrong way (the capstan pulling the tape to the left back under the heads). I pulled the top off and it appears the one motor that drives everything is spinning in the wrong direction - this assumption is based on how the mechanical ff, play, and rewind flywheels (not sure what they're called) seem to interact with the motor.

My guess is this is fairly serious issue, compounded by my relative lack of DIY electronic skills and no test equipment, but I really don't know.

Background/goal is this machine and a bunch of tapes originally from my grandparents are being stored at my folks' house, and I'm looking to transfer the stuff to digital while visiting.

Big thanks in advance for any clues, ideas, guidance...

Steve E.
