Has Tape Op ever did anything on him? Is there any info out there on his recording process?

Guitar Player Magazine had an article about him back in the mid 90's.

Did he do any recording? By which I mean engineering. I always assumed that, like most big film composers who were making scores before I was born, he concentrated on making music and conducting it live while other people did the recording. This would also lead me to think that the recording processes used for his scores were pretty much standard sound stage recording techniques for the time. I would be surprised if what we hear in the films is much at all different from what it sounded like in the room the day it was recorded, though maybe a bit more blown out with distortion/tape saturation (especially in the case of some of the vocal stuff).

It might be worth looking into if there are good books or articles about old film music recording techniques. I just did a quick search and didn't come up with anything but maybe some other folks might know more.

I would assume that the Guitar Player article was probably honoring him for featuring that awesome surf guitar sound so often and helping to make it so iconic. Just a guess.

I seem to recall Tommy Tedesco did a lot of guitar for him.

I would like to think that they drank a lot of Tequila, but I suspect it was more likely grappa.

That's all I got.

Here's some interviews, though none nearly geeky enough for people like us. The first is the most detailed and interesting; based on that one I get the impression that Morricone is very interested and involved with the recording and production of his scores, as evidenced by his partnership in Forum Studios.

You need to check out this album that he actually plays on. This record came out in the same famous series as the Stockhuasen, Ligetti, Morton Feldman, Xenakis, etc..... pretty heavy company. Its a very cool LP if you enjoy the avant garde.
