Sterling Audio ST69

Post by thegeek » Mon Nov 30, 2009 6:57 am

I ran across this mic and I'm interested... I was wondering if anyone had any experience with it...

I know mid-priced mics are often great (and this one is on the cheaper end) but I'm always skeptical.

Anyone in the Lafayette/Indianapolis area that has one I could check out? Or some good recordings of one?

Just heard from a reliable friend. He used this mic and said it killed a real U47 in Nashville. Haven't tried one yet but will probably give one a go on this recommendation. He hasn't steered me wrong yet!
Peace,
Kevin

from what I understand they ar bascially Groove Tubes mics labeled as Sterling to be GC's house brand of mics. I am not sure if this was pre or post Fender buyout of GT.
I do know that there has been a previous history of GC only GT products, Such as the GT DI box that only they have.
Aspen Pitman has more than one weird idea. The GT mics all have a disc resonator in front of the capsule. This extends the high freqs somewhat but makes them kind of spitty sounding on cymbal overheads or loud guitars.

I love my Sterling, and I A/B'd it against a bunch more expensive mics. It's perfect for my voice, but ymmv.

I find the Sterling mics to be pretty bright over all...but even so I picked up a st51 for $23 in trade at a used "everything" store in town. Did some back ups on it and I had to stand about 5 feet away off axis to get a tone that didn't cut through the mix. Still...not bad for the price. Maybe a good candidate for some mods...probably needs to have a better FET put in for sure.
