Allen & Heath analog desk with DAW integration

Post by TapeOpAndy » Mon Oct 04, 2010 12:26 pm

If I were in the market for a new, affordable recording console, I would definitely consider this:

Designer's Notes
The original concept for the GS-R24 was for a larger version of the ZED-R16 with similar routing philosophy, high quality pre-amps and EQ. Interaction with recording musicians and engineers has resulted in many new features being added a full width meterbridge for example, optional interface cards and more flexibility in workflow setup. The GS-R24 is the culmination of many things: exceptional analogue design, super-flexible usability, control and integration with digital workstations, and with an easily removed interface card it can be future-proofed against fast-moving technology, helping it to gain the status of a true modern classic.

Mike Griffin :: Designer :: Allen & Heath

- 24 mic/line input pre-amps
- 24 channels of 4 band EQ with fully parametric mids
- Choice of analogue or Firewire / ADAT interface modules
- 2 dual stereo inputs with EQ
- 2 additional valve inputs
- 6 auxes
- 4 subgroups
- Main Stereo + Mono bus
- PFL, AFL + Solo in Place
- MIDI control
- 5.1 surround monitoring
- Integral meterbridge
- Separate linear power supply
I'd opt for the version with motorised (note my use of English spelling here) faders.

Looks interesting, very.
I think they should have franchised a version of novation's automap technology for the control of plugins..
C'mon, you can't possibly believe what's written on my avatar..

If it sounds good it will be a real contender.

This is the next generation of the ZED R16. If you want to read about its entire development history, there's a very extensive thread on gearslutz.

I haven't put my R16 through its paces but it seemed like a great combo with my HD24. What I have done so far has worked quite well.

Damn them.

I was thinking of putting moving faders on my GL 2800 32 channel console.

Maybe they'll modify it for me... hmmm... gotta talk with this Mike Griffin guy.
Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.

Whoa... If this is reliable and not buggy, it will kick some major ass!

That's a big "if" based on my experiences with the ZED R16. Sold mine after it spent more time in the repair shop than in my studio. Great idea but the FW connectivity was completely flakey. First unit I got died twice, then the replacement crapped out too. Got tired of reliability issues so it had to go. Glad I had the Fireface as a backup. Would still like a hybrid setup, but very wary of going there again.

Shame as the concept was perfect for my needs.

This is one cause of the Firewire problem. Posting link here for reference. Includes photos of the circuit board and wiring in question.

Hmmm looks neat. I have been missing having a board lately.

About the Zed-Firewire...
I am sorry, but what the? Firewire problems? Firewire was new when imacs were blue. It is an old established standard. There is no excuse for flaky firewire drivers or interfaces that spazz out. You can theoreticaly hire a guy that has "10 years experience designing firewire connectivity" at this point. So ...what the?

why can't anyone make something like this without preamps!?
we don't want chip preamps.

My R16 had this problem. It's a very simple fix and a warranty service center can do it in a day. I have had zero problems with my board once it was fixed. I think a lot of firewire issues are the normal ones that come along with not using the recommended chipsets or incompatability issues that you would have with any firewire interface out there. This one is no different. I actually had much more trouble when i had an RME fireface. It has more to do with the other components in your system than the firewire interface IMO so don't believe everything you read on the internet about the Zed not being good with the firewire. I think it's BS. I love my R16, and the most important thing to me is that it sounds great too. The new desk looks awesome, but unfortunately not in my budget. I'm really happy with my R16 is all I can say.
