UREI 7110

Post by kayagum » Wed Nov 03, 2010 12:46 pm

I'm about to make a craigslist dive into a pair of 7110...

... did the search, obviously great on drums, but I wondered how people use this on other applications.

Also probably going to pick up a VLA II, maybe the RNLA to replace the one I sold off to pay for my new board.

Any feedback appreciated.

I too have been very curious about these units. High praise, vague descriptions...

FWIW, I bought a new pair of them when they came out in 1990 or so. I had high hopes. I found the new SSM VCA used inside, a good part at that time. What I found was the side chain was abusive.

They sounded fine until you exceeded -6 db gain reduction. Then they fell apart, badly. We had just about every other comp made at that time and they ended up on the bottom of the food chain.

The 4 Aphex 651's, the quad sets of 1176/1178's all got used before anyone patched a 7110 in.

I got two 7110s and they sound fine. Great on drums, bass, vocals, and they pass the acid test - program material with mix of percussive and steady state signals.
