Something that can help sometimes, if you're just not getting the snare right is to loosen the fuck out of the snares and slide something under them and over the rim on each end. This takes the snares themselves completely out of the picture. Then, you can tune the drum like a normal drum (you said the toms sounded good, IIRC) and then add the snares. Of course, this technique has its drawbacks, but its a way to go back to first principles when all else fails.
