Using Master Word Clock (Multiple Interfaces/Computers)

Post by Winstontaneous » Tue Jul 23, 2013 1:18 pm

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro (Focusrite Saffire Pro24 interface) and 2004 HP PC (running Windows XP, M-Audio Delta 1010LT interface). There are a number of audio tracks on the XP box I want to add to projects on the MBP.

I know I can transfer the files themselves, but if I want to go from the HP --> MBP via S/PDIF should I use one interface as the master clock? What are the benefits of doing so?

Why would you do that, and not transfer the files?

I'm a tinkerer by nature and want to know the optimum way to transfer digital audio between two computers in real time, just 'cuz. I read about clock signals, jitter, etc. in TapeOp and want to apply that to my l'il bedroom setup.

Also some of what I want to transfer is Reaper/AudioMulch projects that are works in progress. I need to do some final trimming/edits and apply Windows-only plugins, figure I may as well just mix them over in real time.
