If you were considering 500 Series... consider this

the Golden Age Pre 573 Series

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audi ... one-preamp

Right now these are $269.99 but they should qualify for the 15% off that Musiciansfriend has going on right now w/Black Friday/cyber Monday. When I bought the pair I have, they did honor it so that meant I paid under $230 each for them.

They have so many tiny little toggle buttons that it may make your head spin (and I have to grab a flashlight every time I adjust one) but at the same time there are so many tone options and they sound pretty good.

I just got done using one with an AEA R84 for a female vocal session and it was perfect. I had started with an Avedis MA5 preamp but it was just too meaty and with the ribbon mic just got too mushy. But with the GAP 573 I left it on the 300 ohm impedance and hit the +10 gain and it worked great.

I've used these on guitar mics (audix i5, sm57, chinese ribbon) and gotten great results too. with the various impedance and gain in/out options you can drive them or not. By the way, these things are HEAVY for a 500 series module.

Slap a couple of these in one of the Lindell or Radial lunchboxes and you can get started at about 1/2 the price (or less than) it used to cost to get into the 500 series...

The list of who does fully participate is probably shorter, eh?

Let me think, Beyer, Celestion, Danelectro, Fernandes, FMR, Groove Tubes, Hamer, Joe Meek, Kustom, MXL, Planet Waves, Studio Projects, Tascam/TEAC ...

(Assuming GC carries 'em, and that they would be listed under those names and not a holding company.)

Edit: because SNARL was correct!

well then apparently I ruined it for everyone else when I bought two of them a couple months ago... 8)

the really weird thing is that I bought them a couple weeks apart and got sequential serial numbers...

Referring to the GAP Pre 573, there may be an issue with running more than one unit in a Lindell 506 500 series rack. There was a recent thread on Gearslutz referring to the start-up current draw of the Pre 573 causing issues with the Lindell 506's switching power supply. The API racks with their linear power supplies are unaffected.
