Mic pre in pedal form?

Post by A.David.MacKinnon » Fri Mar 08, 2024 6:56 am

I've started performing live drone and loop based ambient music. I'm playing guitar through a bunch of pedals and loopers (including a uher report L running tape loops) and want to add the option using my voice in the same chain.
I'm trying to track down a mic pre in a pedal format that will run off of my pedal board power. Super basic is fine. Not having a ton of gain is fine. I just need to get the mic up to passive guitar pickup levels.
Does anyone know if this kind of thing exists or am I going to have to roll my own?

My old Digitech JamMan looper has a mic input, but it fails to run on pedal power it uses it's own AC wart. :?
The previous statement is from a guy who records his own, and other projects for fun. No money is made.

I think Electro Harmonix made something like that. Maybe called 12ay7. Joel Hamilton was into it for a while I think. You might be able to search and find it.

The jamman is decent, so is the EH 12AY7 if you can get it not to hum.

Last year I did a variation on the Hampton jfet, I can't find any completed pics on my phone buy here's a couple of in progress

I have a pigtronix key master that I’ve used for this. 18v power

Eventide mixing link

If you don’t mind the size, you can probably find an older Line 6 floor board with a mic input for cheap, get a bunch of fx as a bonus

Get a passive lo-z to hi-z connector. If that's not enough gain, run it into a clean preamp pedal and then on from there. No need for a real mic pre, IMO. I will say that Scodiddly's Hamptone-based project from a couple years back could probably be set up to work on 9V--with 24V and a step-up transformer on the input, I get ca. 40dB of gain, so I would expect you could get decent levels with that circuit.

JHS Colourbox V2 is essentially a Neve with EQ that also has a mic input. Although powering a condenser may not be exactly possible without something inline?

You could get an impedance matcher for a dynamic mic like a SM58, and run that into a guitar BOOSTER pedal, which should give you enough gain to run the signal down your pedalboard, and not need phantom power.

That should do the trick.
Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.

The Pigtronix and Eventide are both very solid versions of this idea. So is the Radial Voco Loco (also 15VDC).

For a little, no frills mic pre, look at the Rolls MP13 - claims to work from 9V, tip negative!

12AY7 is correct. It's in the same enclosure as the other tube guitar / bass pedals, but it has its own power supply and is a real mic preamp. I still have mine. Haven't used it in a while, but I love it. I've thought quite a few times about racking it.

Thanks all!
I had briefly debated trying to rig something with an altec 1588 octal mic preamp can. It seems like a lot of work though.

I am running a jam man at the end of my chain. Thanks for reminding me that it has mic in! I would like to have access to all the pedals before it with a mic though. And maybe not worry about switching between mic and 1/4" inputs and gain settings. I'll keep that idea in my back pocket though. It might be handy.

I have a xlr-1/4" hi-z/ low-z adapter and an mxr micro amp. I'll start with that and see if it does what I need.

The Boss RC-20 has a 1/4” mic input. Probably overkill unless you want to loop your vocals pre-fx (in which case a 2nd Jam Man would probably serve the same purpose).
