For what it's worth the book "Mastering Audio" has an appendix with a fairly extensive description of what radio stations do the signal they broadcast (in terms of compression/limiting, etc).

about coldplay, i also noticed some weird phase stuff on the 1st song from the newer album. same thing, the cymbals, and high hats in particular were all swishy.
