BEST MONITORS MONEY CAN BUY!

Post by whiskeyblood » Tue May 11, 2004 8:57 pm

I just want to hear what monitors everyone is using. Always interested to hear the varied opinions of studio monitors. Just state the make and model. Keep it short and simple and maybe we'll have a decent list to look through soon.

Quested 2108s. I would've never been able to afford these new (close to 4K for a pair, I think) but I got super lucky and found them used at GC. Easy to listen to for long periods of time, yet very detailed, you can actually hear the low end, and my mixes always translate. Ask soundguy Dave (where's he been, anyway?).

The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over.

Mackie HR824's are really hard to beat for the price.
Blue Sky's are very similar sounding, but have a sub for extended lows.
Under $1k, I really liked the JBL LSR series
Adams are SWEET if you've got the cash.
Unpowered and expensive - try PMC's.
If you've got heinous amounts of cash B&W's are a mastering engineers dream. You can find some really nice older ones for under $2k if you poke around a bit.

the mastering place down the street uses Ohm Walsh mk-2.5's ( http://www.ohmspeakers.com/ )powered by bryston 4bst and a jeff rowland synergy preamp..to bad im stuck with the event tria system..like 20/20's with a sub and a bunch of amps and crossovers..i like it better than the other event speakers though..its out of production now..

If you said the best money can buy, the Dynaudio BM6a's are best in class. True to life and your ears dont bleed after 8 hours... Worth it, if you constantly mix.

KRK V8's our KRK KROKS if you can still find them. Even Better would be dynaudio BM15's.

Adam S3A
NS-10M with cheap Hafler amp
Minimus 7
cheap RCA speakers

on reserve/backup
Dynaudio BM6A
NHT A10

I blew the drivers on the BM6As a few times. I blew all the drivers/tweeters on the A10 within a year. Haven't blown anything on the S3A's in over a year, though they shut themselves off sometimes when I get out of control. Adams are the best nearfields I've used ever at this point. Love them. Who cares what they cost, you'll use them the rest of your life.
