Thoughts on Q-base.
So what do YOU think of the software? We are really messing with it quite a bit, but I have limited experience with it.

if it ggets the job done for you.. kudos. But there are certainly tools that get it done faster and in higher quality... I guess some people dont have the $$ for that stuff, or the "patience"....
so uh, cubase records for you, doesnt crash for you (you're one of the lucky ones then)... have fun!

Re: Thoughts on Q-base.
Unfortunatley this isn't my set up. I am to scared to bring any of my equiptment over to our rehearsal space for fear of it being damaged. So I pretty much just kind of go with what we've got there, which isn't the greatest, but I guess it will have to work. But for a small set up what would be a better choice do you think?

I use Cubase SX and love it. I've used Pro Tools, which is an industry standard for a reason, but I still wouldn't choose it over what I have now due to cost/value/features issues. As far as the older versions of Cubase, they are very limited if you get into large projects but still able to do a decent job. There are many professional engineers out there talking very positive about and using programs like Nuendo which is the granddaddy version of Cubase.

I use it a lot, but the more i have done, the more i see it's limitations, especially with audio. For audio i'd definately rather be on pro-tools, but i don't have that just yet. For MIDI, hell yeah, but that's not really my main thing at all. It works though and rarely craps out.
Re: Thoughts on Q-base.
Cubase SX 2.0 has improved many of the things that drove me crazy in earlier versions.
I think it's great for audio and the MIDI stuff is excellent.
I find I can work really fast doing sampled string arrangements, drum programming, and loops, all perfectly sync'ed with live audio.
Comping vocals, editing drum takes, whatever.
It's a great program.
I hate trying to do MIDI stuff in pro tools. It sucks.
I work on both all the time and don't have any problems doing the same audio editing with cubase.
When they get playlists in Cubase and Nuendo it will be amazing.
Once you get comfortable with it, it's an amazing app.

I hate it. I am more of a DP man. But not in a weird porno way. I guess I should say I am a Digital Performer man.

I like Cubase because it is inexpensive, intuitive (this is my opinion) and compatible with most audio hardware (and easily compatible, that is my opinion again). I thought about Protools but once I figured out that I had to use there hardware I said "fuck it".

Yeah protools sucks the big one. They're like, "Hey Dickhead, do you want to use our industry standard shitball software, then you also have to buy 90000000000 dollars worth of our industry standard shit ball hardware. And mow our lawns."
No thanks...
Captain Adult diapers you hit the nail on the head.

Re: Thoughts on Q-base.
I just did some recording in Cardiff, Wales last week with my friend Martin Carr and he uses Cubbase SX. He used to be the songwriter in the Boo Radleys, but now he does this strange loopy futur indie pop under the name Brave Captain. It kind of sounds like a more obtuse Super Furry Animals. Anyway, he gets some great things going with that software and it did seem a bit more friendly than my Pro- Tools exeriences. He's not an engineer by any means and has pretty limited gear, but he was able to easily manipulate sounds and edit quickly, sort of extemporaneous re-mixing on the spot.
Check out www.bravecaptain.com to hear what he's been up to.

Re: Thoughts on Q-base.
People who slag on Cubase don't know what they're talking about and most certianly don't actually use it themselves. It's very trendy in the DAW world to slag other DAWs as being inferior to theirs in a similar way that Windows and Apple weenies squabble over which OS is better. The sad fact is they're all pretty much the same. They all have annoying bugs, distinct advantages, weird quirky things that take getting used to, and seriously inventive features that help you get the job done - and at the end of the day you're best off just blindfolding your ass, throwing a dart at the wall, and choosing one - and sticking with it. I've been using Cubase since 1996 and have followed it all the way to it's current inception in SX 2.0, and can assure you that it's just as good as anything else that is out there. It's your firmiliarity with the tool that will get the results, the tool won't do anything by itself.

Re: Thoughts on Q-base.
I'm in love with cubase - however I have had crashing problems only when i go to shut it down. But never in the middle of recording and so on. I've gotten many compliments on my work with it. Normally people ask me what Pro-tools i use and I'm like "...none man sorry. cubase all the way". It took me only about 5 days to learn the thing front and back, and thats with using the Dolby Digital 5.1 with it. It makes things so easy that I will stick with it. Plus the cost was cheap.

Re: Thoughts on Q-base.
I have used Cubase on PC since Ver vst3.7 and it definately had a lot of issues(I defaulted to Cubase because I spent 2 weeks with Logic and nearly went nuts).Ver 5.1 was average, but SX2 is goddamn fantastic.
I've used it with a Yamaha DSP24 and M audio Delta 1010lt and have never had a problem.

Re: Thoughts on Q-base.
Excellent post. It makes me remember a conversation I had 10 years ago with a producer whose favorite sequencer was an obscure DOS program called Texture that he had running on a 286. He said to me "you know - the best sequencer is always the one you already know how to run"mixmasterdsr wrote:People who slag on Cubase don't know what they're talking about and most certianly don't actually use it themselves. They're all tools. They will all get you pretty close to where you want to go. Where you place the mic and where you put the fader will make a much much bigger difference towards your end results than which DAW app you choose.
