find an older symetrix sx202 and do the mods to it. You'll probably end up right about $200 and have a very nice sounding 2ch mic pre.

The only true great mic on this planet is the Shure SM-57. It is the most consistant in not totally sucking of anything ever built. All other mics are "application dependant".

Re: Good Mic Pre for about $200 ???
It's not the most popular topic around here, I've gathered.
The Studio Projects vtb-1 has a lot of features for a cheap starved-tube pre. Switchable input/output peak metering, switchable impedence, phase reverse, phantom, hi-z input on the front panel, an insert jack to balance your RNC or similar compressor, variable tube vs. solid-state sound. You can get one for about $130 and put the other $70 towards something else.
Or maybe you can find an old JoeMeek pre on ebay for just a little above your budget amt.

JoeMeek VC3Q...it's definitely colored, but a great pre for under 2 bones.

The ART TPS. It's been surprising me lately. Not so terrible as i thought. Paid $175 for two channels with A/D converters built in.

Here's a thread that might interest you. Very useable sound for under $100.

well i think there are lots of posts about these types of things if you search - this might be why not that many people responded
I have a m-audio DMP3 which was <$200 for 2 channels, phantom power, phase reverse, low cut, 60 db of gain, etc.
it is very clean sounding and is a good deal. i even believe their might be burr browns in it - there are lots of comments on it at homerecording.com/bbs

I really like my Aphex 107. You can get 'em used these days for $100 - $150. I have other cheapos like m-audio, BlueTube, ART, Behringer and the Aphex blows them away. Night and day.
