Audio Technica gear.. Like it or Leave it?
I have recently come into some AT gear for relatively cheap. Got a problem with it?

Yeah. That's why I want them. But I don't really have any money, and people haven't been giving them to me, which is lame.
I am wangtacular.

AT4050 - yeah, it's kind of bright - but a serious 3 pattern utility LDC that can handle some spl - mighty useful - works on a ton of stuff
AT4047 - round and meaty cardioid, smoothed out top end, doesn't work on everything but on the things it does it's awesome, highly recommended
AT4051 - gorgeous sdc, a definite step up from the MC012, a poor man's Schoeps, smoooovv & accurate is how I'd describe it
AT822 - nice inexpensive 1 point x/y stereo - works great for live to portable minidisc stuff
ATM25 - neutralish low end dynamic, not as hyped as a lot of the kick drum mics out there - but still gives you some thump
AT4033 - sorry, although lots of people here love this thing to me it just sounds a little more brittle than a lot of other choices out there.
Pro series - mostly trash, but once in a while not a bad deal
Overall - I feel Audio Technica has become a bit under rated - I think they make great stuff and if you can get your hands on some of it for cheap then go for it.
Best regards,
Steve Berson

i think they are great mics - but just really unpredictable and/or funky in the top end. the 4050 is the only one that isn't so much...but it has this metallic edge in the upper middle instead of the way top like the 4033 and the small diaphragms. i'd like to hear the 4047.
the 4051's i had overloaded in a way i've never heard since - thank the lord. great mic but wow that was a drawback for me. the 4041 and 31 are just spitty...i mean they are cool but you that have that thing up top...if you like it you like it.
they are great...i just think the top is annoying. the dynamics are great. the ATM25 thing is the bomb.

For me, the 4060 is one of the best - a true workhorse. Couldn't live without my 25s.

thoughts on the 4040?
Re: Audio Technica gear.. Like it or Leave it?
Me likey the 3035. There was an interesting thread on RAP where some say the some of AT's 3035s came out sounding better than the much-loved 4033. Some even speculate that the sound of the 3035 contributed to the discontinuation of the 4033, which of course is now back at $100 more. Of course, you might not actually believe a thead on RAP.

To me, the 4040 is not unlike the 4050, but it has a smoother top end. Not quite as clinical. It has the ability to flatter what's in front of it in a very natural way, similar to what the Avenson mics do, except that it's a cardioid large diaphragm mic. The 4050s are still much more flexible mics by nature of their multiple polar patterns, but the 4040 is a really terrific-sounding cardioid condenser.mechanic wrote:thoughts on the 4040?

Man, it's really funny to read mic reviews....I was just thinking about all of you guys talking about the 4050 being bright. It's always relative. Would that be compared to a TLM103? A U87? C12? What? I would say that it might be bright, but really very unhyped in the upper realm. It's so much more usable to me than the 103, which is so bright in just about all circumstances.
Just an observation....
BTW...just for the record, have a 4050, 4040, 4047 in the AT line.
later,
m

The only true great mic on this planet is the Shure SM-57. It is the most consistant in not totally sucking of anything ever built. All other mics are "application dependant".

I love my 4050's... They are pretty versatile mics. However, I use them mainly for male vocalists.
I also have 2 little ATM33a's that can be kinda cool on acoustic guitars.
peace!

the 4060 is the tube dude one right? I used as a mono overhead by house engineers suggestion through some calrecs pre's. He set it up and sounded very good. We also went with the 4060 (if i'm right about it being the tube model) - api - DBX 160 (or was it the symetrix? good thing for notes eh?)for some female vocals going into digi 002. Nice and narly in a subtle gritty cool way.
