Re: Your favorite recorded guitar part ever?
somebody mentioned joey santiago already, and i'll second his work with the pixies, in some cases, his guitar MADE the song (picture "here comes your man)
also, and i didn't want to say this 'cause the rest of the song is, in my opinion, kind of a low point in his career...
the intro to "money for nothing" mark knopfler (dire straights)
great riff, not enough to warrant a 10 minute duet with sting...
sorry mark..

I'll second that. Also, the opening guitar on "Fat" from Icky Mettle.mpm wrote:
Oh, and the main riff from Archers Of Loaf's "Scenic Pastures".

Too so many that were mentioned I would like to add that most anything by Chris Whitley, Steve Bruton, Elliot Sharp, Wayne Kramer, Nels Cline, Reeves Gabrels, Mick Ronson, the guy in Nebula (Eddie Glass, late of Fu Manchu), Mark Ribot, Johnny Marr, Richard Fortus, Will Sargent and Blixa Bargeld I find inspiring.
Re: Your favorite recorded guitar part ever?
Wilco, off Summerteeth - "Via Chicago". If you've heard the riff you know what I'm talking about - mad feedback, twisting tuning knobs - plus, as a bonus, in the last 30 seconds of the song they offset it via ProTools and it makes for an excellent offtime feedback extravaganza.
My second?
The Posies, off Frosting On The Beater - "Burn And Shine". The outro is the finest 5 minute guitar solo I've ever heard that doesn't hit a single note in key for the duration, yet makes me want to slam my car into the garage at 60 mph. Brilliant.
And third, My Bloody Valentine Loveless Track 4 - so beautiful, so wrong.

'we're an american band' by yo la tengo from "i can hear the heart beating as one." from the thick saturation, the dramatic use of amp tremelo, to the unworldly guitar solo buildup, this is a great sonic moment. it sounds like the world is coming apart.

Yo La Tengo ... sheesh, those guys have too many good guitar parts to even mention in one post.
I love the buzzy, fizzy guitars on Sugar Cube; the bright, warm, Fender-y goodness on Pablo and Andrea; the great, playful Dave Schramm licks all over Fakebook.
Damn. Yo La Freakin' Tengo.

That record is a tutorial in awesome rock guitar sounds. Hell, awesome sounds period. I don't think anything exists above 8khz on it, but somehow that doesn't bother me so much.laupflow wrote:My second?

The intro, solo and outro for Wilco's "I'm the Man Who Loves You." It's so intense, yet doesn't take itself too seriously. It's one of the wildest things I've ever heard.
On a similar note (pun intended), the solo that takes up the second half of "The Abandoned Hospital Ship" by the Flaming Lips. It's the first song on Clouds Taste Metallic. Dude's just going nuts!

Can I add another one? Please? Please?
Matthew Sweet / Richard Lloyd- Sick of Myself (from 100% Fun). Best pure pop rock intro, with major compression to boot. Sweet.

It's also a great example of "pick three chords and rearrange 'em to make three different parts".kayagum wrote:Can I add another one? Please? Please?

Re: Your favorite recorded guitar part ever?
Off the top of my head:
The "Paranoid Android" solo never ceases to amaze me. Same with "airbag," and, well, lots of others. And the Guitar work all throughout Hail the Thief is excellent.
All of Melt-Banana's guitars are excellent. Anyone who can make their guitar sound like an air-plane taking flight gets points in my book.
Polvo gets some excellent guitar sounds. Always have.
Archers of loaf is another great one. "The Lowest Part is Free" has some great riffs.
The guitars on "Stereo" from Pavement were great, to name just one song. They have many, many others.
Built to Spill gets some kudos. Always liked the guitars on "Sick and Wrong."
Whoever is responsible for Tom Wait's solos deserves a lot of high fives (It' s Marc Ribot, if I remember correctly).
Always loved the nasty fuzz sounds on "The Aeroplane Over the Sea" from Neutral Milk Hotel.
Isaac Brock had some excellent riffs on "The Lonesome Crowded West."
Bedhead always had some great sounds. Not harsh, not flashy, but just right.
The Harmonics on "Bull in the Heather" from Sonic Youth always struck a chord with me. "Teenage Riot" was a good one too.
All the Guitar's on Yankee Foxtrot Hotel from Wilco. Love those sounds. Friggin' love em.
The guitars on "Reel around the Fountain" from the Halo Benders are excellent (doug Marsh again).
The beat up sound of Guided By Voices always appealed to me. "Under the Bushes, Under the Stars" especially. Mag Earwig was nice too.
The Pixies "Where is My Mind" is another great. That riff makes me peepee.
Hmm...I think I'm getting carried away. I've never been good at picking favorites. Oh well.

Re: Your favorite recorded guitar part ever?
i'll second the guy who said 'Damn. Yo La freaking Tengo.' specifically 'I Heard You Looking,' the instrumental at the end of Painful.
when i'm trying to play or record or arrange something and i say something lame like 'and then rock guitar bliss' or 'and then the guitar comes in and somehow encapsulates everyone's hopes and dreams and feelings of love and sadness and yearning,' what i really mean, i'm realizing, is "it sounds like 'I Heard You Looking.'"

Re: Your favorite recorded guitar part ever?
the one part if I had to pick one that gives me chills to this day, is on the song remains the same soundtrack version of no quarter, right when jimmy comes in for his solo, just a outstanding tone and the perfect contrast, mmmmm I think I'll listen right now!
don't worry we don't need to track, we'll fix it later!
