"Excellent" studios in NYC for $15-25/hr?

Post by Deadtide.com » Wed Sep 15, 2004 6:17 am

I read on another board that you can get "excellent" studios in New York City for $15-25 an hour. That's only $150-250 a day, which sounds awfully cheap to me.

Does that sound like the truth or a load of BS?

Maybe a better question would be, what kind of studio can you get in NYC for $15-25 an hour?

My favorite inexpensive place with the right goods in NYC is Hot Sounds. Very small facility, but I've cut some amazing stuff there (brought in my own producer/engineer). I think they advertise in TapeOp too.

yeah at these prices isn't it funny you could get a studio lock out cheaper than a hotel in NYC?
people seem to be giving it away-

I had a plumber come for an hour recently and it cost 700 bucks-

The B room at my studio in Brooklyn is $200/$250 a day (Pro Tools/Otari 1/2" 8-track). The A room costs a little more and has a 2" 16 track as well as fancier outboard gear but "excellent" recordings can be made in either room.

Maybe it's time to start an on-location plumbing/recording business....

I made the mistake of mentioning my 17 year-old's salary (I was asked) at a party this summer. Seems our local EMT (ambulance) employees make less than my kid does working the fry machine in the kitchen of a local restaurant...

my place is $250 a day. but it's in an apartment and comes with the limitations of being in an apartment. i can do drums here, just not very late. i'd say my recordings are pretty good, not quite excellent yet.

That's about what I'd expect for $15-25 an hour: quality home cooking. Nothing more, nothing less.

I'm 20-30 minutes from midtown by car or train and charge 120$per diem but its usually only friends and the rate goes to maintain and upgrade the equipment so there is no profit..unless you call that a profit..and technically not in the city..but you can be loud and there is a lot of space !

$15-$25/hr seems like prostitution to me. Hell even a hooker gets a better hourly rate.

With all due respect, you couldn't get me to sit on a couch watching Oprah, downing potato chips for that kind of money. But then again, no-one ever said artists were very good at business.

I could be wrong but that sort of business is no good for business. Sounds like a hobby to me.

It cost more than that to park your car in Manhattan :o

I suppose it all depends on your own personal definition of the word "Excellent".
