Heavy Metal Engineers...Andy Sneap, Fredrik Nordstrom??
I love tape op! I've learned so much from your articles...I just wish I could read a little bit about some heavy metal engineers, like Fredrik Nordstrom (Studio Fredman), Andy Sneap, Devin Townsend, Dan Swano etc. Anyone else fans of these engineers and their work? Incredible stuff, with mostly european bands from home-sized studios. If you are unfamiliar, check out Andy Sneap's work with bands like Arch Enemy or Opeth. Devin Townsend does brilliant work on his own stuff with the Devin Townsend band (very lush, full of reverb and lots of color, vocals low in mix but very ethereal). Basically these guys have their hands on anything worth anything in metal. I have recorded new wave/indie sorts of albums, but my forte really is metal. These engineers have influenced me so much on my decisions about guitar tone. Andy Sneap has an knack for a crisp, crunchy, ballsy tone that comes through warm and heavy on guitars...it's become a favorite! Anyone else dig engineers like these? Or care to share about other metal engineers that should be checked out?
Does it sound good or not?

Andy is on gearslutz all the time and uses pretty lo-dough equipment and wont think twice about telling you everything you want to know, right down to giving you plug-in settings!
I also think Terry Date is a pretty kick ass

I can't imagine TapeOp ever covering any of those engineers or anything to do with metal..because it wouldn't be "cool".
BTW-- I saw Arch Enemy when they opened for Iron Maiden in LA awhile back at Universal...they were actually pretty good...metal lives!!!

I think a Sneap article would be pretty cool for tapeop, and certainly fit the tapeop ethic
"uh, I use a mackie board, behringer comps, 57's for guitar, waves plugins"
very attainable for a lot of us tapeoppers and boils it down to what's real, Its your ears.
the new Killswitch eNGAGE ALBUM sounds perfect to me

You are absolutely wrong. All that needs to happen for Tape-Op to start running interviews like this is for people like you to interview them.
You think Tape Op is a big budget mag with lots of writers on staff? A lot of the interviews happen because readers think, "wouldn't it be cool if there was an interview with ______." Then they go out, do the interview, take some pics, and send it in.
So track down these producers, contact the folks at Tape-Op and let them know you'd like to submit an interview, find out what they'll require from you, and do it.

sounds cool to me, I'm not bitching or anything, just think he's doing excellent work with lo-end gear.
I'll see if I can score an interview.
Of course it wouldn't surprise me if somebody on here knows him and has a better in than I do.

Cool, Yeah, I've been aware that Tape Op takes articles by submission. Great! I'll have to look into that. Andy Sneap's work on the Opeth Lamentations dvd was great...excellent live recording...
Does it sound good or not?

Last I heard, however, there was a large backlog of articles waiting to be published.linus wrote:You are absolutely wrong. All that needs to happen for Tape-Op to start running interviews like this is for people like you to interview them.

One engineer that I think is doing a great job is Fredrik Reinedahl! He recorded Gadget, Crowpath, Burst, Dimension Zero, Dark Tranquillity, In Flames, Opeth, Kolony.
That Crowpath CD is really amazing!

Re: Heavy Metal Engineers...Andy Sneap, Fredrik Nordstrom??
true... but they are also looking to represent different genres or approaches in the mag.sserendipity wrote: Last I heard, however, there was a large backlog of articles waiting to be published.
if most of the backlog is interviews with indie-rock engineers, a few metal interviews might cut through.
Re: Heavy Metal Engineers...Andy Sneap, Fredrik Nordstrom??
How about a metal engineering theme issue?
That would be rad.

Amen, brotha'. That first Metal Church album is great. I like the sound he gets with Deftones, as well, although they're not my favorite band ever.Everybody's X wrote:I also think Terry Date is a pretty kick ass
