Rigsby, it's the leather pants. We can blame it all on the leather pants.....and of course the green flaming mullets and the scrotum cuffs. heh

The rumour I heard was that they actually used Mark 3's, but to my ears the Mark IV lead channel comes real close.

----
Mesa Boogie Mark IV lead Channel into Boogie 4x12 closed back with EV12L's

Run it in Simulclass "Non-Tweed" (power switch up) power with EL34's for the Class A sockets (outer two).
Lead Voicing - Harmonics
Tube Setting - Triode
Settings vary with preamp tubes but I found mine at
channel gain 6.5 (pushed)
treble 6
mid 5
bass 2
lead drive 4.5 (pushed)
lead master gain 3.5
presence 8 (pulled)

EQ was in and set for typical "Metal Scoop V"

Again, I'm not into Metallica, but my son was and I certainly can appreciate good tone, as well.
The mark IV has been in my desire since a wee 19 year old.. fucking love that amp.. even though it would take a few months to get through all the setting available .. i'd love to have the combo versions

Hytek,
I was the mullet haired, jean jacket with ride the lightening back patch for many years as a jr' high student. metallica WAS a great band... But seriously... Its not indie rock snobbery that makes me laugh, its just getting high and laughing at you freak out that does it. I still play and record metal. but i also know when to laugh. But i'm only on like page five of this gem. good luck with your endeavors... i can't wait to PM my buddy Rick Hunter about some more Leather pant J-pegs..

This IS a dumb idea and will not improve the quality of the sound.

I would explain.. but I figure I don't need to.
Well have you ever actually tried it dickhead
you can buy all the equipment in the world but it won't write the music for you.

I almost posted a google searched image relating to that last post...but feared my wife walking in and seeing. The explanation..although hilarious.. would have to have been lengthy.

I eagerly await Dynomike's reply to the post.

in all seriousness, the most kickass heavy guitar sound i ever got from a Mesa/Boogie was from the original EL-84 powered Caliber .50.
the particular specimen in question was a short head covered in cream Tolex and had no graphic EQ in it.
i forget the settings (this was a friend's amp, not mine) but the massive yet articulate crunch was transcendant!
the owner of the amp totally nailed the sound this thread was asking about, tho.
he wore leather pants.

the part that really blows my mind is that he was also playing an '80s Gibson Explorer with an EMG-81 in the bridge position!
maybe it's the whole package?
his mom certainly thought so!

I gave your mom my whole package last night. It looked the best in leather pants and a bag over her head. Enter Sandman was playing the whole time.
