"i saw a guy using a D112 on bass. The strange thing was he ran the bass through a proco rat on the way in to the amp. He turned the gain way down low. It sounded okay, and was an intersting new technique."

that was to grit up the GK head a bit...he had the 8X10 but not the head!

I never really loved the D112 on the bass cabinet. I am recording UNSANE right now, and the bass tone is super heavy, and I will be using a multi mic setup (overprinting on purpose) that consists of: RE20,SM57,FET47 and a SABA D77 on the floor. The bass player plays an SVTIII through an 8x10" REALLY FUCKING LOUD. This limits the mic choices, but the sound really is amazing. We are just on basics right now.

damn.

unsane were amazing. i have serious doubts their new stuff will be worth a damn. seems like one of those no-one-gives-a-shit-about-our-new-bands-so-let's-get-back-together things. first two lps were fucking killer. someone should reissue those. or at least put out a cd with all the 7"s and comp tracks.

i'm guessing the new record is for relapse?

i thought their bass tone was pretty fuzzed out - i'm guessing some pedals in there at least? don't imagine a large diaphragm like the d112 would do the trick for something like that anyways.

50,000:

I would have agreed with you about the unsane, but this record is actually pretty amazing. They did re-release selected stuff from the &"'s and old stuff on a record called "lambhouse" on releapse. It has a pal of ours on the cover face down in blood on the steps of a church on the lower east side.

On topic:

What I wound up with on the bass I was talking about: The RE20 has the most low end, The 57 has amazing growl, the avalon U5 DI sounds great, and the FET47 pulled back about 5 feet has some snarl in it . Of course I wound up using everything except the FET47. I wont be using that in the mix probably.

I've liked this set up. AKG D12E about 4' from cab, and either a direct box (sansamp) or a 57 or 121 in closer than the D12E. Its fun to get the bass sound right up front, and have the great low end too. Unsane are cool, too! Fuck Joel, it must be nice!

yeah, i knew about that relapse cd. i just hate cds that are "best of" kinda stuff instead of just a damn discography. i'd rather not drop the $10 each on the 7"s i don't have, ya know? guess i can always just download em...

good to hear the new stuff is good. when i lived in nyc, it seemed they played cb's every 2 weeks and i never bothered to get down and see them. maybe i'll get another chance....

the remarkable d112... try it on backing vox after you've tracked the lead with a condenser. they'll seem to sit very well together in the mix and help to avoid unneccessary panning and eq.
