can you record straight to your DAW at 24 bits? if so, i'd do that. for backups, burn data files to CD-R or DVD-R. or if you can dither and digitally transfer to DAT, back up that way.
another important and probably obvious thing with DATs, excercise them before you use them. when you open up a new dat tape, FF it to the end and then rewind to the top before you do anything.

you guys LOVE dat!
i use dat all the time for live recording,
but i certainly dont think its a good idea to think of DAT as a
