I'm curious what the cost will be, too.
This is really good news... but, I'm not able to use tape "at any cost"

Re: READ THIS IF YOU LIKE TAPE
I have an HD24 coming in about a week. I also planned to keep my MS-16 running anyway (I have old tape.)
New tape is great news. Three months is a bit of a lag and I will still be able to have clients in the meantime. Now I can offer both formats.
However we just got a warning and this could happen again.
Pax, Steve

Re: READ THIS IF YOU LIKE TAPE
Yesterday I bought 5, 7" reels of Quantegy 1/4" from Sweetwater and I believe they only have 2-4 reels left.
The Quantegy tape IMO is an excellent product. I hope ATR can equal or surpass their quality.
In any event, it's great news. Thanks for filling us in Joel.

Re: READ THIS IF YOU LIKE TAPE
In several phone calls and e-mails with other industry professionals since the Quantegy closing, most have agreed that tape is definitely not going away.
The Wall Street investor numbers that Ampex used to put up in the 80's have obviously dropped- which none of us can deny- but the fact that vinyl is still around and represents a steady portion of music sales shows us what we can expect from the analog tape market.
A large corporation can't turn a profit at something like this anymore. A smaller 'boutique' styled operator potentially could. Before we all get excited about the possible return (it's inevitable)- realize what this means- I predict now, that we will be paying upwards of $250 or more for a reel for 2" analog tape when all this gets sorted out within a year. If we all thought tape was expensive before, we are really going to be paying a premium to work in the format in the future. I challenge ATR Services to not make this the a reality with regard to price, but I have no idea how they'd do it.

I cant/shouldnt speculate, but here is a fact:Jeff Robinson wrote:In several phone calls and e-mails with other industry professionals since the Quantegy closing, most have agreed that tape is definitely not going away.

Using existing infrastructure/s keeps unit prices down in any new endeavor...

Joel,
Do you know what formulations ATR based their new tapes on?

Re: READ THIS IF YOU LIKE TAPE
My only concern now is that Quantegy will recover and resume making tape and we have just split the industry between two companies.
Re: READ THIS IF YOU LIKE TAPE
Fuck yeah! I'm buying a tape machine this year!
Let me win the lottery and I'll buy one of them badass 2" 8 tracks that ATR makes.
Sweet........

(in the voice of Eric Cartman) SWEEEET! I'm very glad to hear of this news. I knew that things would work out & I'm glad I didn't go nuts and buy up a buttload of tape (bought 2 reels 1/2" plus two reels 1/4", needed to have some on hand anyways). Now I just need to pickup a mixdown deck when I get my tax refund money. All hail tape!!!
