I'm SO SICK of the Mackie 1604
I'm in the market for an 8-16 channel mixer (Tascam with phantom power or Sound Workshop of possibly a old soundcraft) and in my daily perusing of craigslist and harmony-central and ebay (though I pretty much have ruled out ebay) I am just SICK of how many Mackie 1604's there are out there. Jeez, there's more than Berihngers!
I'm not really all that bent out of shape, I'm just pissed at myself for missing my chance to pick up a 12 channel Sound Workshop for 150 bucks, and the constant stream of MACKIE 1604vlz PRO<MINT CONDITION> $575!!! posts is like salt in the wound.

Yeah...I just did a session on a 1604. What a shit sandwich that board is. EVERYBODY has one though. The studio was also equipped with Mackie 824's. Thank god there was a pair of genelecs in there so I didn't have to use the Mackies. Blech.

So what's your point, do you hate Mackie mixers or do you think they cost too much? $575 for a 1604 is a killer deal.andrew embassy wrote:I'm in the market for an 8-16 channel mixer (Tascam with phantom power or Sound Workshop of possibly a old soundcraft) and in my daily perusing of craigslist and harmony-central and ebay (though I pretty much have ruled out ebay) I am just SICK of how many Mackie 1604's there are out there. I hate the fact that there's so bloody many of them and not enough of the mixers I want.

If you want to see a real killer deal on a 1604, go here:

It's not the Mackie -- it's your skills.

in this case it may not be the talent, but the mixer. there are certain things that it just cannot do and there's no way around that.
Re: I'm SO SICK of the Mackie 1604
I've made many records with Mackie mixers, and every record I mix is monitored with Mackie monitors.jebjerome wrote:It's not the Mackie -- it's your skills.
Keep blaming the gear...

Re: I'm SO SICK of the Mackie 1604
you really need to overcome the summing on those mixers, if you pretend that the yellow lights are the red ones you have a much better chance of getting some dimension out of a mackie mix.

Well, if you like how mackie stuff sounds, good for you. I know of lots of stuff that's made with Mackie gear that sounds great. For me, I find myself battling with it. Maybe it's because I'm not used to it or something. Who knows. To my ears, the 824s are no good at all. Nothing I mix on them translates well.Slider wrote:I've made many records with Mackie mixers, and every record I mix is monitored with Mackie monitors.jebjerome wrote:It's not the Mackie -- it's your skills.

But that's probably due to my subpar "skills."

Does the 1604 sound the same as the 8 Bus?
8 Bus generally sounds transparent to me, though there are severe limitations to what you can do. Soundguy mentioned the lack of headroom. EQ is another item you can't push; the outputs are all 0 dbu (WTF?!?!?); the line-ins are all +4 only, but the tape-ins are switchable -10/+4 (?!?).
The whole thing seems to have been designed on a napkin, and never improved since version 1.0.

FUCKING A SHIT YEAH RIGHT ON. I have one of those and I love it. I was gonna sell it a few months ago, but I got my stuff together in the last minute.ctmsound wrote:Get an Allen & Heath Mix Wiz 16:2 and call it a day.
But, I do think the pres on it are a little weird when you turn em up.
Re: I'm SO SICK of the Mackie 1604
i love mine - had it for 10 years now....i just tracked and mixed through one...i was totally shocked at how good it sounded...just don't hit it so hard...
the kick and snare in particular sounded really really cool.
mix through another board though and you are happy...not the easiest top end to control.
