The "Dark" SM-57

Post by provide86 » Wed Jan 21, 2004 9:50 pm

There was a thread a few weeks ago that attributed the SM-57's sometimes "dark" sound to the fact that the microphone does not match up with the impedance on certain preamps. The SM-57 was my first microphone and i've always regarded it as dark in comparison with my only other formal microphone, the EV-635a, which i always grab when i feel the need for more high end on vocals. I use an M-Audio Omni Studio as a PC interface with the included preamps. Is there a way i can use the 57 without running into "the darkness?"

...unless of course, i'm trying to record my belief in "a thing called love!"

What type/brand of preamp would match up with the 57 better?

(ooooOOOOoooh... GUITAR!)

I'm waiting for my ceiling to open up and release the glowing Les Paul i know it's been hiding up there. In the meantime, thanks in advance.

its rated at 150 ohms, so it should work with just about everything, or at least behave about the same as any other dynamic rated for the same impedance (which would be most dynamics you'll run in to I would imagine).

Maybe darth vader used your mic before you bought it.
