Re: Equipment you HATE but everyone else seems to LOVE
Hi all,
cgarges, i'm totally with you about DW drums. Here in the Uk, a top line DW shell pack will run you nearly DOUBLE a top Pearl, Yamaha, Tama, Premier, it's more than a sonor Designer! No offense to all you yanks ;-p but there's an amazing amount of snobbery about the fact that they are all US made in house, which is an outright lie anyway - the fittings are all made by Gibraltar in Taiwan, and the shells are mostly made by jasper or keller, same as most of the other big US drum companies, and lots of the smaller ones as well. There's nothing wrong with that, but no-one's gonna tell these drums are twice as good as everybody else's top line kits. They aren't that
exciting. One of the drummers I play with collects kits, sold his Dw for a 70's Gretsch in loads of sizes with recut bearing edges, new lug inserst and better legs on the bass drum - far nicer.
Sorry - rant over.
Phew!
Take it easy all,

I'm with you. DW's are so overrated!!cgarges wrote:You all are pussies because none of that stuff is as hated as the Alesis 3630. Ha!
Yeah, I dig the 3630!
Rock on.
I'm also drunk. But I still dig the 3630.
On the other end of the spectrum, DW drums are INCREDIBLY over-rated.

I've got to second the vote for Rode NT5's. I had a pair and liked them but didn't love them. Then I got a pair of MK012s and sold the NT5s in a huff. I figured I'd have two different cheap flavors, but it wasn't even worth keeping them around.

Re: Equipment you HATE but everyone else seems to LOVE
Ok, Chris Garges said it. DW drums. Everybody seems to think that they are the most amazing kits ever. I'm not so impressed. I've played with a 1969 Ludwig for 5 years, and it's been awesome. When I first saw signs of major damage to the kit from gigging it, I retired it as a "recording only" drumset.
Then I needed a drumset that would be for practice and shows. I picked up a relatively cheap, used DW (nearly the same dimensions as my Ludwig).
I'll admit, it's got beefy hardware. Those shells are the thickest I have ever seen. It's easy to tune. It can take a beating.
But it sounds boring. That set impresses me very little sonically.
That's why I only use it live, and not on the records.

Beyer M201. A friend loaned me a pair. I've tried them. I don't get it.
Ditto on the DW drums. Ick.

The Korg Triton.
It's on 99% of Hip-Hop & R&B records.
It sounds plastic.

Re: Equipment you HATE but everyone else seems to LOVE
If i'm honest, i've never heard a synth sound that actually sounds like the instrument it's supposed to replicate. I don't have an issue with synths sounding like synths, but i can't be dealing with 'hey, this sounds just like the real thing!', because it doesn't. Ever. One of my friends calls me a purist because of this.
Re: Equipment you HATE but everyone else seems to LOVE
I don't get the mania for sharp bearing edges on drums. So not only do I not like DW's, I basically don't like anything the drum companies are currently churning out. I think thin shells with rounded edges are just yummy.

I hate MIDI. Mostly because I don't really get it.
