People who say (about the latest digital doohickey), "This sounds just like a B3!" No it doesn't.

i have not had the great fortune to have play'd many b3's, but i have come across a couple. each one w/ its own personality. i agree, numbers can never emulate nature. but have you heard the ne2's?
im tellin' ya, down to the key click. props to the oompah loompahs in norway.
maybe this should of been in the love/ hate thread, for awhile the postings were neck & neck........

I got to use a pair of Daking 52270's for a while. Not sure if I noticed the same dynamics-sucking experience, but I did notice that there is a very small boundary between headroom and hard clipping. Ugggh when they clip it's harsh. But other than that I was really digging them.andyg666 wrote:the studio i used to freelance at had a pair of daking preamps that everyone swore by. no matter what i did with them they completely crushed all dynamics out of whatever i ran through them... literally chopped peaks right off my overhead tracks...

Yes I have. They sound good, but they do not sound like a real B3. Even Native Instruments B4, which is the best B3 simulator I've heard, doesn't quite cut it.nipsy wrote:i have not had the great fortune to have play'd many b3's, but i have come across a couple. each one w/ its own personality. i agree, numbers can never emulate nature. but have you heard the ne2's?

One thing no one has emulated is the curve of the volume pedal. When you use the volume pedal on a real B3 to turn it down, the highs turn down more than the lows. This is really handy when you're kickin' bass because you can use dynamic comping without losing your bass sound.

regarding the les paul copies:
skip the epiphone and go straight for the new Samick les paul copy. I bought the nicest one in the line (the A-7...?) and HOLY SHIT! It is the most solidly built, nicest playing guitar I own and I paid a whole $350 for it!!!!
It smokes epiphone les pauls, I've owned two. Beautiful figured top, not a "photo-flame" either. Nicer hardware than any epiphone, too. Wilkinson bridge, Gotoh tuners... Only drawback is the pickups, had to replace those. A damn nice guitar for chump change.
Besides, samick makes all the epiphone guitars for gibson anyway, and a host of other off-shore guitars like Ibanez, etc.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not anti Epiphone. My favorite guitar is my sheraton II semi hollow.... yum.

AKG D112... not sure why it has become the standard kick drum mic; way too much click, not enough midrange.
For the record, I love P-90's and Telecasters.

Ok.
But I was asked.
I never say "never" but I find I generally have no use for:
SM57 and 58
AKG D112, 451 and any of the newer 414 models (I have used an older one that I like).
I like the U87 but I think it might be over rated in this day and age (does that count? Probably not.)
I dunno....I think I hate more "uses" than pieces of gear when it comes down to it. Like, for instance, when people have to find the brightest friggin mic they own for OH duty or how ALL vocals or ALL cymbals or ALL anythings HAVE to be mic'd with condensers like it was written on a stone tablet by God. Or how guitar distortion HAS to be a wall of static. You get the idea.

all the best guitar sounds i've ever gotten have been telecasters.xSALx wrote: Most Fender guitars. I hate them, but especially the Telecaster. What a piece of shit.
apparently i hate a lot of the same shit as everyone else
57s
414s
ns10s
all things mackie
DWs
but, after the session i did on saturday, what i currently hate most is........
the way the tracks sounded after transferring from my 8 track to computer. i mean...they're fine, i could just really tell the difference and it bummed me out.
Re: Equipment you HATE but everyone else seems to LOVE
Well first I'll start off by letting everyone know i'm new around here, i have to say that i hate the musicians the most. ok really i could run down this list for days of what i hate that everyone loves but i'll go with the TLM-103, D-112, anything mackie, and the DC2020.
But there is also the one thing I love that everyone I know hate and thats the DBX 163

Re: Equipment you HATE but everyone else seems to LOVE
They were always just too thin for me. No body, whatsoever. Maybe it was just the amps that I was using. Or not. But I still hate them, while everyone else loves them.all the best guitar sounds i've ever gotten have been telecasters.
And...
