Neumann KM - tube mics
Anybody know the low down on the KM tube mics?
I.E. What is the difference between the KM54 & KM56?
What is the difference between the 84 capsule and the 85 capsule?
Where can I go read about this stuff?

OK, this is really easy.
Goto www.Neumann.com which is the German site.
Click on the "InfoPool" link.
Then click on the "Historical Products" tab just below the gold line.
Or click here where I've done that part for you.
Then just look up each model you want to know about and there are brochures, tech specs, user manuals, etc. usually in a couple of languages on everything they've ever built.
Really a great resource for learning about microphones as well.

Re: Neumann KM - tube mics
The thing that confuses me is that the km84 is described as cardiod but the one I found has a 3 position switch on the power supply (omni, cardiod, figure .
Also, the power supply looks like a telefunken mic pre plug-in module. Instead of the big cube with the leather handle.

Re: Neumann KM - tube mics
hey .
i have 2x KM184.
i use it on hi-hat, vocals (backings), electric guitars , ...
you name it. it does it. REALLY GOOD MIC. the only i do not like about them is their size... a little bit too small.
stole this from the neumann site....
The KM 183 omnidirectional and KM 185 hypercardioid microphones are based on the tremendously successful KM 184 cardioid microphone, which has become a standard within the global studio community in just a very short time. All "Series 180" microphones are available with either matte black or nickel finish.

Re: Neumann KM - tube mics
the kmi84 is a KILLER mic, really sounds a lot better than the 184. its cleaner, less self noise. such a wonderful mic. for as much as i love the 184, it really puts the 184's to shame

The KM84 doesn't require an external power supply. Perhaps you saw a different mic.thedug wrote:The thing that confuses me is that the km84 is described as cardiod but the one I found has a 3 position switch on the power supply (omni, cardiod, figure .

Re: Neumann KM - tube mics
I have a KM-54. It's my favorite drum overhead and acoustic guitar mic. If you search the web you'll find the article about engineer Bill Porter's early 60's Elvis sessions at RCA-B in Nashville. He used a km54 on OH and a km56 on a guitar amp (I think) . These recordings are some the finest productions ever IMO. I also have an SM-2 which is a dual 56 (stereo). The 56 has a prescence peak so it sounds a little different. Great mics!

Re: Neumann KM - tube mics
I got the KM54.
I was retrofited with a kk84 capsule.
Which seems cool cuz I can put on any of the other kk capsules.

Thoughts?

Re: Neumann KM - tube mics
Well... honestly, without the original nickel capsule it isn't going to sound like a KM54. I'm sure the mic will probably still sound good and the ac701 tube is a part of the sound of a 54/56, but the capsule makes a huge difference. I've never heard a 54 w/ an 84 capsule so maybe it is a great combination...

Re: Neumann KM - tube mics
If I were you I'd search for a NOS 54 capsule. I have seen NOS capsules for the km56 on ebay so they are probably out there.
