Cleaning a Mic capsule

Post by magazinesoundrecording » Thu Jun 26, 2003 8:36 am

I have a Sony C37a that I have cleaning up. The mic was laying on someones table with the screen off for a few days. I am cleaning it up because I couldn't stand to see it that way. I would like to clean the dust of the capsule, but am not sure how to do it. Any tips, advice, suggestions or don't do's would be appreciated.

I would be very very very very careful!!!!
You could destroy the mic. I would send this to a professional!
Anybody have any suggestions?

I would consider a high-pressure steam cleaner.

Than I would reject that option.

Same with Orange Blast, and carborator cleaner.

Ultimately, if gently blowing onnit doesn't clean it, I'd definitely consider a pro's attention.

After she was done ("she" being my preference, YMMV :P ), I would bring the mic to an expert, as they (both mic's and experts) are fragile things.
bandcamp;
blog.
I mix with olive juice.

we have had threads like this before, on the old board. we came to no consensus. but we were talking about serious cleaning. like getting 10 years of spit particles off of a capsule.

if it is just dust, it should be easy enough for you to do if you are careful... i would start really far away blowing some canned air... and slowly come in towards the capsule... without getting too close.

it's just dust. im not looking touch the capsule with anything. I thought of just using an air can. that seems like the best thing. starting far away of course.

How about the grill. It is pretty yellowed or greened. some sort of cleaner? I feel like it would be pretty fool prove to clean, but want to be sure.

Read this:

http://www.josephson.com/clean.txt

And maybe this:

http://www.firebottle.com/ampage/bbs/fi ... 000000.msg

The article from Josephson is definitely the best no-bs article available on the subject. Does it work? Yep! Cleaned something like ten capsules till now without killing any of them. With very good (audible) results also..
