You can live very meekly on $400 a month. I live in chicago for $420 a month after rent and i get by ok, but NYC is a lot more expensive. You'll be eating a lot of pasta. As far as what you're concerned about here's the deal:
pawn shops are expensive. go to salvation army or good will stores.

rolling paper is cheap, but american tobacco is really bad compared to even the cheapest european stuff. If you're used to good European tobacco you're gonna be sad, but I don't mind american tobacco.

You can scam America Online and get 2 months free and then cancel and then resubscribe for another 2 free months. you can get the cds in grocery stores or in a bunch of other places.

if you have a cell phone you can buy minutes as you go, but it's not cheap. you have to be stingy with your phone. That's all I got, so good luck,
Dan

it's entirely possible. you can eat quite well for cheap in the city. look out for chinese bakery's, vietnamese sandwhich shops, burger king's 99 cent menu  . find a good pizza place, the pizza is so good here, you never get tired of it.

cedric wrote: 2) are there some nice and cheap stores with used furniture around?
try the salvation army. or craigslist.org. people give away stuff all the time, especially when they are moving.

cedric wrote: 3) good pawnshops?
there is a pawnshop on flatbush and schermahorn in downtown brooklyn. it's not really that cheap or interesting really.

cedric wrote: 4) what is the paper for rolling cigarettes called (RIZLA)?
just ask for rolling papers at a news stand or bodega. bamboo's are good, ez-widers are huge. rolling tobacco usually comes with papers in the pouch.

cedric wrote: 5) and a good brand of tobaco for self-rolled cigs.
don't know, it's been a while. i buy my papers for rolling "other stuff"

cedric wrote: 6) what's a good internet account to have (for 3 months only)?
7) cheapest cell-phone subscription?
i doubt anyone is going to give you a great 3 month deal. they all have contracts for at least a year. plus there is usually some sort of activation fee initially. sign up for a service but make all your payments in cash. this way when you ditch the country, they can't track you down and charge your credit card for breaking the contract.

cedric wrote: 8) any good advice?
get used to drinking 40's.

we ran the beatniks out of town a long while ago. it's just us yuppies now.
