See if some studio in town has an SSL. Talk the studio manager / engineer and see if they'll let you intern for a month or so if things are easy around the studio. You'll run some errands and what not, but also be around the SSL every day seeing how it runs.

I think that would help out a lot. And maybe some of the other guys will have some articles to read to get you familiar with it first. It's just a big Tascam :)

Just contact SSL through their website. They have free CD-rom's explaining several of their console's features. Check them out, then hit them up to have someone give you 'training'. They sat down with me for a day and walked me through eeverything. A friend called them, and they hooked up a studio and did the same.

Cancel, Cancel, Repeat

Name here end mix

These should get you started! I don't know of a course like you are seeking. I'd get in and start assisting on a G-Series board and then move up to the J/K automation.

Great link Gyraf!

Here's some of the main basic things you'll want to know on the G series(make sure you have a disk in the drive)...

Projects/Reels:
[name][reel] name [ex] (This creates and names a reel)
[reel] name [ex] (makes that reel current)

Total Recall:
[name][setup] name [ex] (This stores a complete scan of the console)
[revise][setup] name [ex] (This changes the setup into the current settings)
[play][setup][ex] (This runs the recall and shows the set up)
[large]/[small] (zooms in on a section)

Cues:
[cue][ex] (This makes a cue point, "Verse 1" for example)
[cue] name [at] time [ex] (Makes a cue were you want it)
[cue] name [to] time [ex] (moves a cue point to a different time)
[revise][cue][from][cue] (resorts the cue list)

Automation: Oi...I'll get to this later... My client just showed up...

at MTSU, we have a 4000G... one of our best professors made these videos. they're extremely helpful. i'm not sure if he covers automation or not, but they're a great view:

this is also the place to find that infamous Steve Albini lecture, Studer's digital D950 console videos, and some silly music videos...!

Disks and stuff
Format [ex] (This formats a new disk, just follow the prompts)
Begin [ex] (Reloads- I do this before each session)
Label [ex] (Labels the disc, or allows you to choose your reel size if working on the old ass cartridges)
Alter [ex] (Stores the list info- useful so you'll only have to change the song title instead of Art, Pro, Eng, Ass, etc everytime)
Floppy [ex] (Makes the big floppy drive current- 8 inch I think)
mini [ex] (makes the 3.5 drive current)
DI [ex] (shows remaining space on disk)
Sign -your message- [ex] (Silly message that shows up at boot up. "I wish I was Protools" is a common one)
TI [ex] (Shows the SSL time-very commonly set wrong)
Set CL [ex] (Sets clock)
SMPTE [ex] (generates smpte- flashing Smpte = the system is set to the wrong TC rate... ? = wrong speed or tach * = no tach, if you SSL interface box to the tape machine is blown this is a good place to troubleshoot)
[cycle] ex (Cycles from the now point to where you are)
[left/right] (cursors through cues, mix, sync preset, tr, setup, notes, and track pages)
[up/down] (lists info with title, mix, TR lists)

Automation This might be kinda tricky to explain, so I'll try to avoid shortcuts. I'll do my best and try to give you the commands. For starters, you'll need to know the modes and fader status:
modes
1. UA Update Absolute*
2. RC Revise Cuts
3. AT AutoTakeover
4. PV PreVeiw
5. IP Immedate Pickup
UA + RC = Play Cuts Only
Pressing the number's activates/deactivates the modes. When you start, you'll need to do a "static pass"- just play the song down once without touching anything.
fader status
ABSOLUTE Red LED
PREVIEW ABSOLUTE Flashing red LED
MANUAL (See SAFE MODE) No LEDs
REPLAY No LEDs
TRIM Green LED
PREVIEW TRIM Flashing Green LED
TRIM (Fader) READ CUTS Green + flashing Red LED
TRIM (Fader) WRITE CUTS Green + Red LED
ABS (Fader) READ CUTS (UA + RC) Red + flashing Green LED

[setup][mix][ex] (This gets the party started... starts a mix from the current location- be careful starting a session at 00:00:00:00, rewinding backwards can freak the computer out because it goes past the 24 hour cycle. This is one of the main reasons people start sessions at 01:00:00:00. Also, make sure to give yourself some preroll)
[mix][on/off] (Uhm, yeah, turns the mix system off and on)
[join] or [revise] (must be out of mix)
[end] (Stops mix and asks for a name)
[cancel] X2 (Cancels a current mix pass)
? [mix] (Displays mix start)
? [end] [mix] (Displays mix end)
[large/small] key (toggles bargraphs)
[fsm] (toggles 'Status Locked' mode)

Sometimes I'm such a fuckin tard... I get this far with all this b.s. out and I notice a link scribbled in my notes and found a second one:

J series http://www.solid-state-logic.com/downlo ... n_Book.pdf
